5 Case Study 2: Method of Piling Work Over Running Water

Depth of river varying from 1 meter to 4 meter, measuring from river bed to top water
level during high tide. While width of the river ranging between 18 meter to 21 meter.
Installation of micropiles in the river bed required skills and special tools.

4.6 Piling Procedure

4.6.1 Permit to enter and permit to work shall be applied prior to entry and execution
of any work on site.
4.6.2 Site clearance grubbing including taking down, removal of the vegetation,
shrubs, trees, stumps, logs, bushes, undergrowth, crops and structures as
directed by SO.
4.6.3 Check survey and setting out shall be done and witnessed by SO’s
representative.
4.6.4 Mobilisation of plant, machineries and materials to site.
4.6.5 Fabrication and assembling of temporary structure for access and to carry out
micropiling works (i.e. pontoon and temporary scaffold).
4.6.6 Execution of drilling works
4.6.7 Installation of casing and API pipe reinforcement. Joint for casing shall be
threaded type to avoid any hot works.
4.6.8 Execution of G40 grouting works.
4.6.9 The process are repeated until the completion of mircopiling works.
4.6.10 Demobilistion of plant and machineris off site.

4.7 Sequence of Work (with illustration)

*Disclaimer:
The figures shown in this section are solely for the purpose of illustration to
understand the overall process and methodology to execute micopiling works on site.

Figure 10: Step 1 - Prior to any commencement of works, site clearance

and setting out shall be executed along the existing pipeline bridge.

Figure 11: Step 2 - Pontoon shall be assemble on land and deploy to water surface.
Micropile rig shall be mobilise on to pontoon.

31
Figure 12: Step 3 – Loading of casing and reinforcement material into the second
pontoon.

Figure 13: Step 4 – Positioning of micropile rig to first pile point. Note that safety
railing of pontoon at front part is removable.

32
Figure 14: Step 5 - Prior to drilling, pontoon shall be secured to nearby trees
and anchor to river bed for stability.

Figure 15: Step 6 - The second pontoon mean for service pontoon to bring
casing, genset and reinforcement. Standby boat for safety purpose and to
move around the small tools, cement and other material.

33
Figure 16: Step 7 – Moving the pontoon platform and service pontoon to
subsequent pile point, upon completion of upon completion of first pile point.

Step 8 – Repeat the process until all micropile points completed.

Figure 18: New crosshead beam, pipe rack, walkway platform and other
accessories shall be completed and discussed by others.

4.8 Case Study 3 : Preparing Design of Working Platform or Floater

As discussed in the Chapter 1, the Serian River where the pipeline is crossing is not connected
to the sea, makes it impossible to employ heavy equipment such as barge, mobile crane, air
compressor and piling machine. Limited headroom between soffit of existing pipe rack and
top of water level also another limiting factor that should be considered in selecting tools and
equipment. Due to those reasons, tailor-made pontoon must be designed and self-construct
by the Contractor.

Figure 19 : F10 bridge single line diagram (Source : BSP, January 2020)

The allowable maximum dimension of the pontoon is 5.0m (W) x 6.0m (L) x 2.5m (H), this is
to allow the pontoon to cross underneath the existing pipe bridge, to complete the micropiling
installation on the opposite side of the bridge once one side have been completed. The design
calculation of the pontoon is tabulated as follow, and the proposed drawing is also attached.
