The New Hardware Development Trend and the Challenges in Data Management and
Analysis

Please read the article study of Pan et al. (2018), on the new hardware development
trend and the challenges in data management analysis and answer the following
questions:

1. What is the importance of hardware as an element in the advancement of

computing services and application development?

 The hardware serves to facilitate any computing operations. It also works

on getting input and outputting or storing the calculated results. According
to the article “The New Hardware Development Trend and the Challenges
in Data Management and Analysis,” by Wei Pan, Zhanhuai Li, Yansong
Zhang, Chuliang Weng, a growing set of new hardware, architecture, and
features are becoming the foundation of the future computing platforms.
Therefore, hardware is one of the most significant elements in the
advancement of computing services and application development
because it is the groundwork of creating useful computing services and
developing application that would be beneficial to the people. Also, without
suitable hardware, the software (which are used to develop applications)
may not operate efficiently or at all.

2. What are the different hardware trends and their uses in the environment of
data management and computing?

 Processor Technologies
Hardware that process and store the data

 Storage Technologies
Hardware that delivers high-performance data cache support for
the powerful parallel processing

 Network Technologies
Hardware that manage and deliver digital resources over a
computer network
3. What are the emerging challenges in the system architecture and design of
new hardware to provide better solutions and functionalities in developing
a system?

 One of the emerging challenges in the system architecture and design of

new hardware is the emergence of high-performance CPUs and new
accelerators that caused the need for a hybrid processing architecture to
be introduced. Data processing strategies and optimization technologies
have evolved from standardization to customization, and from software
optimization to hardware optimization. From the classic iterative pipeline
processing model to the column processing model, to the optimization of
the vector processing model combining the above two, the traditional
software-based data processing model has reached a mature stage.

4. What is the impact of the challenges and trade-offs on the new hardware
that will be developed in the future?

 According to the article, new hardware and environment have a systemic

impact on existing technologies. Also, it is necessary to change the design
concepts of algorithms and data structures in the new hardware
environment. Direct migration or partial tuning of algorithms and data
structures cannot take full advantage of the modern hardware features.
The impact of new hardware and environment on data management and
analytics technology is comprehensive, deep, and multi-domain. Due to
the new features of the new hardware environment, the data management
system functions cannot be customized to accommodate the new
hardware environment. In addition, in the new hardware environment,
hardware/software coding is an inevitable way for data management and
analysis systems.

5. As a student, what do you think are important considerations in the

development of new hardware to support system applications and
development given new technological advances?

 For me, the new features of the new hardware environment should be
inclined with the data management system functions so they can be
customized to accommodate the new hardware environment. It is also
important that while providing higher physical performance, software
architectures and related technologies for data management and analysis
require the sense to adapt to the new hardware features. Additionally, the
development of new hardware should be consumer-friendly despite its
advanced performance so that most people can have access to it. Lastly,
the upgraded versions should be compatible with diverse devices.
