ARC FLASH RISK ASSESSMENT
ARC Flash Hazard:

 Occurs when electric current jumps through the air.

 Can burn your skin and clothes, damage hearing, and knock you
down.

 Qualified electrical worker can prevent and protect himself from

injury.
Arc Flash Risk Assessment:

An arc flash risk assessment shall be performed and shall:

Determine if an arc flash hazard exists. If an arc flash hazard exists, the risk assessment shall determine:
Appropriate safety-related work practices
The arc flash boundary based on incident energy that could reach face and chest .
The PPE to be used within the arc flash boundary
Completed and results listed on energized electrical work permit before anyone works on energized parts
of circuit over 50 volts.
Employer may consults an NFPA chart that ranks various jobs by hazard and risk and lists required
protective gear .
Informational Note No. 1:

• Improper or inadequate maintenance can result in increased opening

time of the over current protective device, thus increasing the incident
energy.
• Where equipment is not properly installed or maintained, PPE
selection based on incident energy analysis or the PPE category method may not provide
adequate protection from arc flash hazards.
Flash Protection Boundary:
Distance from exposed live parts with in which you can get a second-
degree burn if an arc flash occurs.
( Incident energy equals 5J/Cm2 or 1.2 cal/cm2).

4 feet for system of 600 volts or less.

Is calculated with a mathematical formula at higher voltage and for

various fault current and clearance times.

Is listed in the energized electrical work permit.

Wear appropriate protective equipment with in the boundary.

Personal Protective Equipment

What you need for a particular task is listed

on the energized electrical work permit. It
is your job to gather required equipment
and inspect it before each use.
PPE USAGE GUIDELINES
Wear loose-fitting clothing, for comfort
and additional insulation due to trapped air.
Close shirt at neck and wrists, and jacket
or rain gear.
 Wear safety glasses or
goggles under face shields
or hoods
PPE USAGE GUIDELINES:
~ Follow the manufacturer instructions for
care and maintenance of protective
equipment.

~ Do not use.
Damaged or impaired equipment.
Equipment contaminated with grease, oil,
flammable liquids or combustible materials.
