BOX CULVERT

1. Scope: This item covers all the operations required to the construct box culverts to the lines
and levels as per the requirements.
2. Components:
2.1. Main barrel of Box section.
2.2. Wing wall & Return in RCC.
2.3. Curtain wall in PCC.
2.4. Aprons & Floor protection.
2.5. Weep holes of 100mm dia. A C Pipes@ 1000 c/c in staggered manner both vertically and
horizontally.
3. Sources of materials:
3.1. Coarse Aggregates: From crusher after establishing suitability as per standards and
obtaining approval.
3.2. Fine Aggregates: River sand shall be used. The requisite tests shall be conducted and
approvals shall be sought for use.
3.3. Cement: Cement from approved manufactures/sources shall be used.
3.4. Water: The water approved quality shall be used.
3.5. Admixtures: To control the WC ratio and workability, appropriate and approved admixtures
shall be used upon approval for use.
3.6. Stone for boulder apron & pitching: khonadalite stone from approved nearby quarries shall
be used. These shall have minimum 30cm dia each shall weigh not less than 40kg.
3.7. Cement concrete blocks: As flat stone is not available in this region, Cement concrete blocks
shall be adopted for the top 150mm thick layer.
4. Production, Transportation, laying and Curing of concrete:
4.1. The concrete of appropriate mix shall be produced at concrete batching plant.
4.2. The concrete is laid in place through chutes/head loads.
4.3. Construction joints: Constructions joints shall be minimized in the structures. Constructions
joints provided if any shall be cleaned from loose aggregates / laitance and made rough
with wire brush. While laying next concrete the surface shall be made wet and coated
with thick coat of cement slurry.
4.4. Curing is effectively done by covering the concrete surfaces by gunnies and wetting the
gunnies at close intervals or by pounding.
5. Tests and Sampling Procedures:
5.1. The sampling of all materials as per specifications shall be collected and tested in the
laboratory established at site for this project.
6. Equipment Details:
6.1. Batching Plant: Batching plant with integrated weigh batching shall be used for production of
concrete.
6.2. Vibrators: Pin vibrators shall be used for effective compaction of concrete.
6.3. Generators: Portable gensets shall be used to cater the requirements of power.
7. Safety, Environment Etc,
7.1. All effective and requisite measures shall be implemented to ensure full safety to the
concerned work force, machinery & general public.
7.2. Effective and sufficient care shall be taken to minimize damage to the environment and
cleanliness in all works is given the utmost importance.
8. Diversion of Water:
8.1. The requisite and efficient methods are adapted to suit the particular need of diverting the
water.
8.2. The approval is sought prior to the implementation of any method.
9. Activities:
9.1. Prerequisites:
9.1.1. Obtain & check latest construction drawing.
9.1.2. The locations are marked and checked by Concessionaire’s representative.
9.1.3. The benchmarks shall be established after connecting with the GTS bench marks in the
region.
9.1.4. The grid levels shall be recorded and got verified by Concessionaire’s representative.
9.1.5. The drawings are prepared as per ground requirements and approval of Concessionaire’s
representative is sought.
9.1.6. The approval for the appropriate concrete Mix design is obtained.
9.1.7. The layout is setout and beacons are established and protected.
9.2. Main Activity:
9.2.1. ITP & IRB are initiated.
9.2.2. Excavation for foundations is made to required level and lines.
9.2.3. Bed is compacted and leveling course concrete is laid.
9.2.4. Concreting.
9.2.4.1. Base Slab: The reinforcement shall be placed in position and shuttering is erected to
exact dimensions of base slab and after due checks, base slab is concreted to the top of
bottom chamfer and joints is maintained as detailed in drawing.
9.2.4.2. Walls: The walls are cast to bottom level of upper chamfer. The procedure adopted will be
same as base slab.
9.2.4.3. Top slab: The shuttering is made to support the top slab and necessary care is taken to
seal the joints to avoid slurry loss from concrete through joints. The steel is positioned
and concreted.
9.2.4.4. The formwork is removed after due time as per norms and blemishes, if found, are made
good.
9.2.5. The inlet & Outlet structures, the aprons and floor protection works are constructed in
similar progression.
9.3. The surroundings are cleared of all surplus stocks, waste materials etc., and cleaned. The
structure is finished as per specifications including necessary markings, paints etc., and
completed.
9.4. The structure is handed over to the client.
