What is Anthropology? Derived from a Greek word Anthrope meaning “man” and logy meaning “science” Thus, it’s literal meaning is science of man. The American College Dictionary defines anthropology as the science that treats of the origin (development physical , intellectual, moral , etc.) and varieties , the cultural development,customs, beliefs , etc. of mankind Jacobs and Stem define anthropology as the scientific study of the physical, social, and cultural development and behavior of human beings since their appearance on earth. The dictionary further defines anthropology as the study of man's agreement with and divergence from other animals Man differs from other animals Biologically - Man walks erect in two feet - Man has two free hands - Man has more complex brain Man differs from other animals Behaviorally - Man is rational - Man has complex techniques of producing, procuring, and preparing and cooking for food. - Man has social, educational, economic, and governmental organizations. - Man has a system of religious beliefs and practices - Man communicates by means of a complex language, oral and or written - Man makes tools, weapons, gadgets and artifacts.
