What is Anthropology?
Derived from a Greek word Anthrope meaning
“man” and logy meaning “science”
Thus, it’s literal meaning is science of man.
The American College Dictionary defines
anthropology as the science that treats of the
origin (development physical , intellectual,
moral , etc.) and varieties , the cultural
development,customs, beliefs , etc. of mankind
Jacobs and Stem define anthropology as the
scientific study of the physical, social, and
cultural development and behavior of human
beings since their appearance on earth.
The dictionary further defines
anthropology as the study of man's
agreement with and divergence from
other animals
Man differs from other animals
Biologically
- Man walks erect in two feet
- Man has two free hands
- Man has more complex brain
Man differs from other animals
Behaviorally
- Man is rational
- Man has complex techniques of producing,
procuring, and preparing and cooking for
food.
- Man has social, educational, economic, and
governmental organizations.
- Man has a system of religious beliefs and
practices
- Man communicates by means of a complex
language, oral and or written
- Man makes tools, weapons, gadgets and
artifacts. Constructs strong and
comfortable shelter

- Study of man’s behavior and his habits,
practices, beliefs and etc.

- Study of the subdivisions of mankind

- Concerns man’s language and his manner
of communication

- Ice Age when man first appeared, 2.5 million years ago

- Stone Age, Recent period, 10,000 years ago
The earliest hominid (man) is an Australian
dopithecine jawbone with two molars , two
inches in length found in Lake Baringo, Kenya in
February 1984
The earliest stone tools are abraded core
choppers, dating from circa 2.5 million years ago
found at Hadar, Ethiopia in 1976
Uses of Anthropology
❏ Helps establish historical facts and events
❏ Gives us knowledge of the diverse cultures of
the world
❏ Gives us a picture of the current conditions in
the different countries of the world
