REFERENCE DOCUMENTS + Specification according to ASME B31. 1 Power Piping-Edition 2012 3 METHOD AND EQUIPMENT “ Localized Electrical Heating Pads Method of Heating PWHT Is catried out using electrical resistances with ‘automatic or manually operated machines rated 65 or higher KVA, 3 phase 380V at 50 Hz with 6 channels. = The heating elements shall be flexible ceramic (sintered alumina) pad heaters capable to withstand 000°C with mutti-stranded Ni-Cr electrically insulated element wire rated at 20 to 80V. = The cold wire shall be Ni or N-Cu wie. Recorders shall have a range 0 to 100°C minimum, inlets for 6 minimum type K thermocouples (TC), capable to accommodate charts at least 150 mm wide and with variable chart speed regulator. -Inculation shall be provided by ceramic fiber mats (stainless steel or Nickel alloy wire mesh cover) 25 mm thick approximately and ‘with minimum density of 64 Kg/m’, = When mineral wool is used, thickness shall be approximately doubled. TC shall be type “K", Chromel/Alumel, stif type or wire type. 4 PWHT PREPARATION AND METHODOLOGY: - A circumferential band shall be heated until the specified temperature range exists over the complete circumference of the pipe section, with a gradual diminishing of the temperature outward from the edge of the band which includes the weld, - In case of butt, socket of attachment welds, the band, centered on the weld, shall extend 75 mm or three times the wall thickness minimum, whichever is greater, beyond the edges of the weld, - In case of branch welds, the band shall extend 50 mm or three times the wall thickness minimum, whichever is greater, beyond the edge of the weld joining the branch connection or reinforcing pad to the run pipe; the run Pipe shall be heated all around, “TC attachment may be by low energy capacitor discharge or by welding. The TC to extension cable connection shall be clear from the heating zone and compensating cables shall be used to connect TC to recorder, ~TC shall be attached on the wold or within 20 mm from the weld edge to ensure an effective temperature ‘control. 4-1: Thermocouple and Arrangement : Thermocouple Function : The Main Function for Thermocouple is to convert Electriaity to Heating equally around the concerned Area. Thermocouples .. should be from nicke-chromium/nickel-aluinum type BS4937, part 4,type K or equivalent- Thermocouple extension cable ... copper-constantan compensating cables should be used, The copper lead (#¥e) should be connected to the nickel-chromium conductor (non magnetic) and constant lead (ve) to the niokel-aluminum conductor (magnetic). Insulation shall nat be removed until the heat treated welded joint has reached approximately 60°C for personnel protection purposes. ‘When PWHT is terminated, TC challl be removed by light grinding and surface visually examined, T= Nominal Thickness WW: Welding Width HWB: Heating Wrapped Band = 3 WW or 1", which is greeter. Rev.01 | Date 26082013 abo Power Piping ASME B34 Page ot 5 Heat Treatment According to ASME B31.1 Power Piping: 6-1 : Preheat as per ASME B31.1 Power Piping (2) The base metal temperature prior to welding shall be at or above the specific minimum temperature in all directions from the point of welding for distance 3 inches or 1.5 times the base metal thickness whichever greater (as defined in paragraph 131.4.1 of ASME B31.1), (0) When welding two different P-Number materials, the minimum preheat temperature required shall be the higher temperature of the material to be welded. (0) Thickness referred to the greater of nominal thickness at the weld of parts to be joined. {d) The preheat temperature shall be checked by use of temperature indicating Crayon, thermocouple pyrometer, or other suitable method to assure that the required preheat temperature is maintained prior to and uniformly maintained during the welding operation. (e) For Grade 91, the minimum temperature preheating shall be 700° F (370° C}, otherwise refer to applicable WPS. (f) For Grade 81, Welding should be continuous after starting. f interruption of welding must occur, the \eld shall be a minimum 1/3 complete and the preheat shall be maintained until welding continuous or 2 post bake is performed, {g) Post-weld bake out : 315° G for min 30 mints the when proper "iow hydrogen practices are maintained ‘and consumables have a low hydrogen designation". {h) Mandatory coo! down period to PWHT: the weld shall be allowed to cool in still air to 150°F(65" C) ‘maximum prior to starting the PWHT thermal Cycle, 5-2 : Post Weld Heat as per ASME B31.1 Power Piping (a) All welds in materials including in the P-Numbers listed in Table 192 shall be given a PWHT within the temperature range specified in Table 132, except as otherwise provided in paragraph 132.2 and 132.3. ‘The range specified in Table 192 may be modified by Table 132.1 for the lower limit and paragraph 429,3.2 for the upper limit. {b) The materials in Table 132 are listed in accordance with the material P-Number grouping of Appendix A of ASME 831.1 (c) Heating Rate is 270°F/hr (160°C) maximum from 600*F (350°C) to 1375°F (745°C). (a) For ASTM A335 Grade P91 alloy, PHT temperature Range is 1375°F (748°C) to 1425°F (778°C) ie; 1400°F (760°C) plus/minus 25°F (15°C). {e) When joining Grade P91 alloy to Grade P22 alloy, the requirements of Grade P91 shall apply. (f) When joining Grade P91 alloy to Grade P11 alloy, the requirements of Grade P91 shall apply. {g) For ASTM A335 Grade P22 alloy, PWHT temperature range is 1300°F (705°C) to 1400°F (760°C) i.e; 1350°F (732°C) plus /minus 25°F (15°C). (h) Holding Time for PWHT is 2 Hrs minimum plus 15 minutes for each additional inch (25mm) over 2 inches (50mm) Nominal Thickness, () Cooling Rate is 400°F ir (220°C/hr) maximum from 1375°F (745°C) to 750% (400°C). Cool in still air for temperature less than 750°F (400°C) with Insulation wrapped over the weld )) When parts of Two different P-Numbers group are joined by welding, the PWHT shall be that specified for the material requiring the higher PWHT temperature. {k) When a non-pressure part is welded to a pressure part and PWHT required for either part, the maximum PWHT temperature shall not exceed the maximum temperature acceptable for the pressure retaining part (l). PWHT is NOT mandatory and is NOT required for the following conditions: (1) Weld in a non-ferrous material (2) Weld excepted in the table 132 of ASME 831.1 (3) Weld subjected to temperature above the lower critical temperature (see Table 129.5.2) during fabrication provided the WPS has been qualified with PWHT (see Paragraph 132.1 of ASME B31.1) at the temperature range fo be reached during fabrication. (m) PWHT may be conducted by any of the following methods: (1) Heating in Furnace: Heating an assembly In a furnace should be used when practicable, an assembly may be PWHT in more than one heat in furnace provided there is at least a 1 feet (300 mm) overlap of the heated sections and the portion of assembly outside the {umace is shielded so that the temperature gradient is Not Harmful. Direct impingement of flame on assembly is prohibited. (2) Local Heating: Weld may be locally PWHT by heating a circumferential band around the entire component with the ‘weld located in the center of the band. Identification of the Joint during PWHT may be by the TC number or color appearing on the chart.
