INTRODUCTION

Survey camp is a part of our curriculum as per the revision

scheme in order to get the practical knowledge of theories which we
have studied, in the subject of surveying lst and llnd.

For survey camp, we selected Sadguru Nithyananda Ashramam,

Guruvanam situated in Hosdurg Taluk, Kanhangad municipality. The
site is at a distance of 4.5 Km from kanhangad.

Page 6
Survey Camp Report S N P T C Kanhangad

NEED AND SCOPE

The need of survey camp is prepare a topographical map of the

site by surveying from whole to part. The whole site was divided
into six zones and each zone was provided for one or two squad.

First we conducted reconnaissance survey of the whole site

with respec to reconnaissance survey we prepare key plan of
Guruvanam. By selecting suitable theodolite stations, theodolite
traverse was run and the included angle were taken for co-centering
reduced levels of required points were determined by taking staff
readings by Dumpy level.

The traverse was plotted by the method of independent co-

ordinates. The interior details were filled by plane tabling.

PROCEDURE FOR SURVEYING

The procedure for surveying includes the following steps.

1. RECONNAISSANCE SURVEY

The preliminary inspection of the area to be surveyed is called

reconnaissance. The object of reconnaissance is to get a intimate
knowledge of the as to form an idea regarding the difficulties of the
work, and time required for the survey etc.For this, the surveyor
should walk over the area to be surveyed, carefully noticing all its
details, such as buildings, roads, compound walls etc. And also
probable positions of station points and chain lines etc.

2. PREPARATION OF KEY PLAN

During the reconnaissance survey rough sketch of the area to be

surveyed is prepared. This is called key plan and it includes general
resemblance of the plan of area and the north line. This helps us very
much in the field work and office work.

3. FIXING OF MAIN SURVEY STATION

After the completion of reconnaissance and key plan, the main
survey stations are to be fixed such that each station is visible from
the preceding and succeeding station. The position of the stations is
marked clearly by driving pegs and they are numbered

Page 8
Survey Camp Report S N P T C Kanhangad

4. REFERENCE SKETCHES

After the stations were marked, they should be located by the

measurements, preferably from three permanents, well defined
object in the vicinity of the stations .Reference sketches are
necessary to find out the position of stations incase if they are
displaced or required at future

5 .TRAVERSING
In the survey camp traversing was done by using theodolite. This
method is used in land surveying, were great accuracy is required. in
this, the bearing of the first line is measured using prismatic compass. An
included angle at each traverse station is measured using theodolite by
using general method with face left conditions.

Our batch started works from station no:42 the work is proceded
in anticlockwise direction. The instrument is set up at '9.30am' and the
included angle between line 42-55 and 42-43is measured by face-left
readings. The distance between the instrument stations are measured
accurately with chain and tape. Readings was entered in tabular columns.

GALES TRAVERSE TABLE

Add up the included angles. Their sum should be equal to (2n-4)
90. Where `n’ is the sum of traverse legs .Apply the necessarycorrections
to the angles , so that the sum of the corrected angles is exactly equal to
(2n-4)90Calculate the whole circle bearing of each line convert theminto
reduce bearings and determine the quadrants in which the lines lie. From
the known lengths and calculated reduced bearings of the lines complete
their latitude and departures (consecutive co-ordinates)

Latitude=length of line X cosØ(R.B)

Departure = length of line X sinØ (R.B)
Add up all northings and all southings .Find the differencebetween
them similarly find the difference between the sum of all eastings and
westings consider northings and eastings as +ve and southing and
westing as –ve.
Apply transit rule for the correction of latitudes and departures, so
that the sum of northing (+ve), and eastings (+ve), westings (-ve) is
zero.
Accprding totransite rule,
Correction = E x L or D
ƩL or ƩD
Where,
E = Total error in latitude or departure

L = Latitude or departure

D = Departure of corresponding line.

Page

Survey Camp Report S N P T C Kanhangad

Find the independent co-ordinates of the lines from the consecutive

co-ordinates so that all co-ordinates are +ve and the whole traverse will
lie in the first (N,E) quadrant.

PROFILE LEVELLING

Profile leveling is the process of leveling to determine the elevationof point at

known distances a part along a given line and then toobtain theaccurate out
line of the surface of ground. It is also called longitudinal leveling
orsectioning. When the profile is plotted the vertical scale usually 10 times the
horizontal.

CROSS SECTION

point to right are be plotted to Cross sections are run at right angle to the
fixedline along which the profile leveling is done .these sections are taken on
eitherof the center line .These sections are taken usually plotted with the
samehorizontal and vertical scale. A suitable datum line is drawn and
perpendicularlines are drawn to mark the levels of the various points on the
cross-section. Thepoint on the line is plotted to the left of the center point &
the right.

CONTOURING

INTRTODUCTION

1. ESTABLISHING TEMPERARY BENCH MARK:-

An arbitrary bench mark is established ROCK MARK near the work shed
(50.00).

2. PREPARATION OF CONTOUR MAP:-

A contour may be defined as the line of intersection of a level surface
with the surface of the ground .The process of locating contour lines on
the surface of the earth is called as contouring and the map upon
which, these lines are drawn is called contour map. The consent vertical
distance was 1 m and contouring is done by method of squares R.L was
calculated by H.I method. Horizontal equivalent was 10-30m.

3. INTERPOLATION OF CONTOUR LINE:-

The process of spacing the contour proportionally between the plotted

ground points is termed as interpolation of contour. It is done by the
method of arithmetical calculation. Hence the point of same elevation
are found out and they are joined by smooth continuous lines to
represent the respective contour lines.

4. TRACING AND FARE COPY:-

After completing all these works of making contour line the

topographical map and contour map were traced.

CAMP DIARY

First day
Camp work started at 10.00am. A reconnaissance survey was conducted
and key plan was drawn 52 traverse stations were fixed in the given plot.
Reference sketch of allpossible points were prepared work was closed at 5.00 pm

Second day
Theodolite traversing
After submission of key plan necessary instrumentswere issued and our batch
reached the given plot from 01-02 at 9.00am. the theodolite traversing was
started from station 51and it is preceeded in anticlockwise direction. For this the
instrument was set up over the station and all temporary adjustments are made.
The magnetic bearing offirst line is taken with the help of trough compass .The
horizontal included angle at each of the traverse stationand the help of
theodolite. All the distances are also measured by using chain. The work was not
completed.How even it wasclosed at5.pm.

Third day
The work was restarted at 9a.m and it is continued up to 5p.m

Fourth day
Being the angular error is within the permissible limit. We prepared the
Gale’s traverse table. The traverse is plotted by using independent co-ordinates
to a scale of 1:400. The area of traverse is calculated work is finished 5.00pm.

Fifth day
Contouring

We reach the plot at 9 am.today we started contouring by using

dumpy level, leveling staff, chain. The bench mark is shifted to the
highestpoint of our allotted area . Reading were takenout
required points. Work was closed at 6pm.

Sixth day
The work was restarted at 9 am and it is continued. It is closed at
5pm.

Seventh day
We reach the plot at 9.am and the remaining work in
continued. We stop the work at 5pm.

Eighth day
We continued the work from 9.to5pm.
