Explain briefly the significance of the relationship of each of the three theories of Calista Roy, Benner,
and Orem to Maternal and Child Health Care/ Nursing.

These theories creates a huge impact in the health care setting and is not only useful in nursing
education but most especially in clinical practice. Through different contributions made by each
theorists it resulted to innovative approaches and improve nursing practice specifically in Maternal and
Child Health Care/ Nursing.

Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model

In connection to the Maternal and Child Health Care/ Nursing, this theory is a widely used for dealing
with variety of illnesses and its purpose is to increase patients’ or nurses’ hope and trust as well as their
physiological and cognitive adaptability to their conditions. With that being said, using this theory would
help mothers to adjust to the stressors prenatal or postnatal. The role of the nurse here is to be the
guide towards adjusting to changes and encourage them to consider the duties they must play as a
mother. When women fail to meet the goal of this theory, it leads them to non-adaptive behaviors such
as depression which is why adaptation model will serve as a framework in understanding and dealing
with the factors that affects the adaptation to change.

Patricia Benner’s Theory

Patricia Benner’s theory stresses about developing certain skills to achieve the desired stage of
professionalism and it is gained through experiences. It explains that a nurse should go through a long
progressive process and encounter different clinical situations to have the ability to provide quality
nursing care.

In connection with the Maternal and Child Health Care/ Nursing, this theory is greatly significant
because it serves as a guide for the development of nurses and would provide patients especially in the
OB, a quality nursing care. And to have this quality nursing care, you need to go through a long process
and encounter different clinical exposure. Such skills can be developed overtime, and

Benner’s theory allows nurses to distinguish or to know if where sila na belong like if you are a fresh
graduate you should identify yourself as a novice and you are limited to do

so example like a

Benner’s theory also encourages student nurses like us to have this confidence and continuous learning
experience until we meet the level of competency.

Dorothea Orem’s Theory of Self-Care

This theory’s role in the Maternal and Child Health Care/ Nursing is to impart the knowledge of self-care
process especially to mothers in postpartum. The use of this theory allows women to recover from the
diagnoses made and for them to prepare also for aftercare as soon as they leave the hospital and as
nurses, Self-care is a necessary to be promoted by teaching women to distinguish between the changes
that occur during puerperium because it is also their duty to take care of their selves. Pregnancy is a
complicated process and an emotional experience for women, characterized as a time when women
undergo physical and psychological changes that can result in a variety of emotional reactions. If this
isn’t implemented in hospitals, mothers would have a hard time in dealing with their responsibilities,
postpartum period and the whole healing process.
