with the staff who had never worked in sales. Involving all the employees in common meetings and celebration

to bring out collaboration among them. Making the overall goal clear with giving them specific responsibilities

and suggesting to support each others with the trust.

Case Study 4: Supervising Experienced Workers

You are considerably younger than the people whom you supervise. You have a bachelors degree, and
physically fit. Right out of college you went to work for Bounce Fitness Melbourne Centre in an on-the-
job training program with an eye toward becoming a Centre Manager. You learned well and was promoted
to Assistant Manager in just under a year. You are not only younger than anyone but also better educated,
too. Discuss the following questions :

Question 4a: How can you become a good supervisor for your older and more experienced workers?
I can be a good supervisor among such people by being humble and applying the suitable communication

tactics which they preferred .Also, respecting their experience and contribution they have done for the company

and suggesting new ideas in a humble and understanding way. Being open about my ideas and showing them

my role is to support and enhance their skills for the long haul.

share their problem and what they want from my side. Respecting all of them equally and supporting them

humble and friendly way using suitable word.

Case Study 5: Ethical Decision-Making

Martin Saunders, Assistant Manager at Bounce Fitness Sydney Centre noticed that the cash in the till was
coming up short every day or so. The cash had always balanced previously. The videotapes made by closed-
circuit TV for the past week revealed nothing.

Martin went to the Centre Manager, Jacinta Scott’s office to report the findings from his investigation of the
missing cash. He told her that he had studied the tapes and could not determine who was stealing the
money but that only one employee, Lucy Jeffrey, had handled the banking in that timeframe.

Martin cannot close this investigation without a suspect, he proposes that Jacinta look through Lucy’s
employment file to determine if there are any alternative reasons for firing this employee.

After diligent examination of Lucy’s file, Jacinta notices that her resume while job application and
previous employment details proof do not exactly match the information. Lucy was terminated at last
employment , but she mentioned as ‘resigned’ from the job. Under the company’s rules on providing
misleading or incorrect information, this may be grounds for termination; however, Jacinta never would
have noticed it had it not been for Martin’s zeal to auspice the theft on Lucy.

Jacinta also recognises that Martin’s performance will be enhanced if he is able to catch an internal thief.
Jacinta does not think it is fair to let Lucy continue working if she did steal the money; however, she feels
that she is also innocent until proven guilty despite the circumstantial evidence.

Discuss this with your group and then answer the following questions:

Question 5a: What are the ethical issues?

It is not appropriate to terminate lucy without any proof of evidence only by judging her past misinformation.

Their may be chance of breaking employment contract and it may make her disappointed and depressed.

Also, there is no indication of lucys skills deficency and weakness in her performance during working hours,so

it is not suitable to terminate her according to the other employee suspicion.

Question 5b: Who are the people involved or impacted by the missing money?
people involved are assistant manager martin Saunders, jacinta scott and lucy jeffrey. These three people are

impacted by the missing money because as assistant manager Martin needs to solve the problem

and lucy handle the banking so she is responsible and jacinta as central manager needs to maintain financial issues

and give the decesion.

Question 5c: What are the possible alternatives?

Possible alternatives is to inform and suggest lucy about the missing money and to make her realize that

she is responsible for the missing money and she needs to be carefull about that.
Providing lucy a chance indicating that there should not be such problem in future. Also, suggesting Martin

to findout a strong proof of the evidence and actual reason behind the case.

Question 5d: What are the ethics of the alternatives?

Ethics of the alternatives refers to choosing suitable alternatives among the option by considering ethical manner.

In this case, there is no proof of evidence so, collecting strong proof to terminate her and

suggesting lucy to be more responsible and not to repaeat the mistake if she had done still

\ keeping her in work are the two best alternatives considering the ethics.

Case Study 6: Managing Someone You Intensely Dislike

Paul Thomas was the Centre Manager in the Bounce Fitness Cairns Centre. Last month he lost a personal
trainer and General Manager Human Resources, Laura Irish, hired a new trainer, Jim Hunt, from another
fitness centre. Jim had seniority and was a personal trainer, so it was logical to hire him. The trouble was
that Paul did not like him from the very first day. He considered Jim to be loud and obnoxious. Jim did not
take supervision or direction well.

Jim’s attitude and comments also bordered on offensive. Paul was proud of his Centre and team. He was
aware that he had to continue to prove himself, although his people-management skills and his quiet, but
firm style of leadership made him a natural choice for Centre Manager. He knew that there were a few
people who thought he had been promoted just to make the company look more balanced. Many of the
Centre Managers and Executive Team were female.

Try as he might, Paul just could not stand being around Jim, so he began to avoid him. Whereas before Jim
came on board, Paul had spent a considerable portion of his day being visible and approachable to his
employees, he now spent more time in his office. Laura Irish noticed the change in his behaviour and
questioned him about it. Paul admitted that he was having a hard time adjusting to the ‘new guy.’ Laura told
him that he was too good a Centre Manager to let that get to him, and he would have to find a way to get
along better with Jim.

Paul finally decided to approach his CEO. He met with Margaret House, the CEO who had been helpful to
him once before. Margaret listened patiently to Paul’s concerns and gave him some advice. She instructed
him to continue being present out on the floor the way he had always been. He couldn’t allow his feelings
about Jim to compromise his relationships with the rest of his team.

Discuss this with your group and then answer:

Question 6a: What could Paul do professionally?

Paul needs to carry out his strength on his work place of being present out on the floor.

Also,he can try to understand newly hired Jim by communicating with him.
He can suggest Jim to change his behaviour in a humble way which may solve the problem

. Moreover, he can also request Laura and CEO to suggest jim to cooperate with Paul.

Case Study 7: Leadership Styles

Working on your own now, for each of the following situations, which of the four leadership styles
(democratic, bureaucratic, laissez-faire and charismatic) you would apply in each situation and why you
think this style is most appropriate. Write your response in the blank line provided.

a) The Manager must install new methods for recording the sales because there have been
shortfalls for several months.
In this situation bureaucratic leadership is appropriate because there have been short falls for severval
month and this style of leadership will encourage employee to follow appropriate rules and technical behaviour to
solve the shortfalls problem.

b) The Manager has volunteered the team to trial and assess a completely new process. They will be
required to provide intensive and detailed feedback.
In this situation democratic leadership is applicable because this style of leadership supports equal
involvement of all participants in decision making process where employee can give genuine feedback and ideas.

c) This team is a high performing, high achieving one that has been working together for five years and
skilled in doing their jobs. A new roster is to be introduced and it must be decided who will work
what shifts.

laissez-faire leadership is appropriate in this case because team is qualified and they dont need too much
guidence from the leaders. Leader can trust their employee in this situation.

d) A new roster has been introduced and it means that many of the team have had to change their
start, finish and break times. It has reached a point where the Manager must intervene or risk a
breakdown of the team structure.
charismatic leadership style is more favourable in this situation because leader needs to conveince and
motivate employee with charm and interpersonal communication to implement new policy and changes.
