Interference

1. A biprism is placed 5 cm from a slit illuminated by sodium light (λ = 5890 Å). The
fringe width obtained on the screen is 0.9424 mm. The screen is at a distance of 75
cm from the biprism. Find the distance between the two coherent sources.
2. A thin sheet of glass (µ = 1.5) of thickness 6 µm is introduced in one of the paths of a
biprism. It shifts the central fringe by 5 bands. Find the wavelength of light.
3. In a Fresnel biprism experiment 75 fringes are obtained in the field of view with
wavelength 5893 Å. What will be the number of fringes in the field of view with
green light of wavelength 5200 Å.
4. Interference fringes are produced by monochromatic light of wavelength 5460 Å.
When a thin transparent sheet of thickness 6.3 x 10-4 cm is introduced in the path of
one of the interfering beams, the central fringe shifts to a position Occupied by 6th
bright fringe. Compute the refractive index of the sheet.
5. In a Newton’s rings experiment the diameter of the 15th ring was found to be 0.59 cm
and that of the 5th ring was 0.336 cm. If the radius of the plano-convex lens is 100
cm, calculate the wavelength of light used. (5880 Å)
6. In a Newton’s rings experiment the diameter of the 4th and 12th dark rings are 0.400
cm and 0.700 cm respectively. Determine the diameter of the 20th dark ring. (0.906

7. In the Newton rings arrangement, the radius of curvature of the curved side of the
plano-convex lens is 100 cm. For λ = 6 x 10–5 cm, what will be the radii of the 9th and
10th bright rings?
8. In the Newton rings arrangement, the radius of curvature of the curved surface is 50
cm. The radii of the 9th and 16th dark rings are 0.18 and 0.2235 cm, respectively.
Calculate the wavelength.

Diffraction
1. Calculate the angles at which the first dark band and the next bright band are
formed in the Fraunhoffer diffraction pattern of a slit 0.3 mm wide (λ = 5890 Å).
2. A plane diffraction grating has the value of grating constant equal to 15x10-4 cm.
Calculate the position of the third order maximum for λ = 2.4x10-4 cm.
3. A grating has 15 cm of the surface ruled with 6000 lines/cm. What is the resolving
power of the grating in the first order?
4. In a grating spectrum, which spectral line in 4th order will overlap with 3rd order line
of 5491Å?
5. The sodium yellow doublet has wavelengths 5890 Å and 5896 Å. What should be the
resolving power of a grating to resolve these lines?
6. Light of wavelength 5500 Å falls normally on a slit of width 22x10-5 cm. Calculate the
angular position of the first two minima on either side of the central maximum.

coincides with third order maximum of an unknown light. Determine the wavelength
of the unknown light.
12. A plane transmission grating has 40,000 lines in all with grating element 12.5 x 10-5
cm. Calculate the maximum resolving power for which it can be used in the range of
wavelength 5000 Å.
13. A plane transmission grating has 16,000 lines per inch over a length of 5 inches. Find
(i) the resolving power of the grating in the second order and (ii) the smallest
wavelength difference that can be resolved for light of wavelength 6000 Å.
14. Show that the diameter of the nth dark ring is directly proportional to square root of
natural number and nth bright ring is directly proportional to square root of odd
natural numbers.
