Assignment 1: Labelling Specific Actions Used by a Driver with a Car Dashboard

Due: week 5 (Wednesday/Thursday, October 4/5, 2017)

Please download and print the two PDF dashboard templates

Complete this assignment with reference to your existing car or one that you might be
able to look into during the weekend.

Required steps

For each of the following three systems:

1. Information System – traffic report, you are required to travel from downtown
Toronto to airport either by way of Don Valley/Highway 401 or Gardiner
Expressway/Highway 427.
2. Heating & Ventilation System – you are planning to go downhill skiing and you are
warmly dressed, current outside and interior car temperature –10°C, desired interior
car temperature 20°C.
3. Navigation System – you would like to use cruise control as you encounter light
highway traffic and you desire to maintain a constant speed.

For EACH of the THREE systems listed above:

A. Identify the Seven Stages of Action

B. Draw and label each dashboard component using your existing car system.

C. Through research, describe in one paragraph a new and improved feature for your car
dashboard. Include reference source.

D. Draw and label a second dashboard showing the design improvement you have either
found or recommend.

GNED 189 Assignment 1 (10%) – Seven Stages of Action

1. Information (Entertainment) System – traffic report, you are required to travel from
downtown Toronto to airport either by way if Don Valley/Highway 401 or Gardiner
Expressway/Highway 427.

A. Seven Stages of Action

1. Goals Travel from downtown Toronto to the airport in

the fastest way.
2. Intention to Act Find out which is the fastest and shortest way
between Don Valley/Highway 401 and Gardiner
Expressway/Highway 427.
3. Sequence of Actions Use the radio for the traffic information, check
the map and cameras on the highway by
smartphone.
4. Execution of the Action Sequence Turn on the radio and listen for traffic reports.
Use google map and surf the internet to access
cameras on highway.
5. Perceiving the State of the World According to the reports from radio, google map
and the images from cameras on highway,
Highway 401 seems to less busy than Gardiner
Expressway at the moment.
6. Interpreting the Perception Choose Highway 401 because it is the shortest
and fastest way at the moment.
7. Evaluation of Interpretations The information getting from radio, google map
and images from cameras of highway by
accessing the internet is reliable. I will use them
next time. It would be better if the car has a GPS
device showing the map, so I don’t have to check
the map on the phone.

B. Include drawing of existing entertainment system on dashboard (use PDF File with
labels.

C. ONE paragraph description of new and improved feature for your entertainment
system. Include reference source.

D. Include drawing of new entertainment feature on dashboard (use PDF file without
labels).

GNED 189 Assignment 1 (10%) – Seven Stages of Action

2. Heating & Ventilation System – you are planning to go downhill skiing and you are
warmly dressed, current outside and interior car temperature –10°C, desired interior
car temperature 20°C.

A. Seven Stages of Action

1. Goals Set the interior car temperature at 20°C so that it

is comfortable for me to drive to downhill for
going skiing.
2. Intention to Act Turn on the heating system to set up the
temperature and drive downhill.
3. Sequence of Actions Get in the car, settle down, start the car. Adjust
the Heating and Ventilation system to the desired
temperature. Go downhill for skiing.
4. Execution of the Action Sequence Get in the care and settle down. Then start the
car. Switch the air intake selector
RECIRCULATE mode. Press the A/C button for
heating. Adjust the temperature selector toward
warm (red zone).
5. Perceiving the State of the World Heating and ventilation system is working
properly. The temperature is increasing
gradually. But it is hard to know the exact
temperature in number.
6. Interpreting the Perception The air in the car is finally warm enough to feel
comfortable but it is hard to know the exact
temperature at the moment. I can only wait until
feel that air is maybe approximately at 20°C.
7. Evaluation of Interpretations The heating and ventilation system is working
fine. The time to reach the desired warm air is
acceptable. But it would be better if the system
has a screen to show the temperature so that it is
easy to figure out, not just feeling. Moreover, it
would be much better if I can set up a constant
temperature so that I don’t have to wait for the
air to be heated up.

B. Include drawing of existing H&V system on dashboard (use PDF File with labels.

C. ONE paragraph description of new and improved feature for your H&V system.
Include reference source.

D. Include drawing of new H&V feature on dashboard (use PDF file without labels).

GNED 189 Assignment 1 (10%) – Seven Stages of Action

3. Navigation System – you would like to use cruise control as you encounter light
highway traffic and you desire to maintain a constant speed.

A. Seven Stages of Action

1. Goals Keep my car at a constant speed when driving in

light highway traffic.
2. Intention to Act Use the cruise control to set up speed.

3. Sequence of Actions When reach the desired speed, turn on the cruise
control by pressing the ON- OFF button. Set the
speed at constant by pushing the lever down in
the SET direction. Take my foot off the
accelerator penal.
4. Execution of the Action Sequence The car is at the desired speed in light highway
traffic. Press the ON-OFF button to turn on the
cruise control and set speed by pushing the lever
down in SET direction to maintain the current
speed of the car. Now i can take my foot off the
accelerator penal.
5. Perceiving the State of the World The car starts to move at constant speed. The
cruise control can be cancelled if the speed falls
below 40 km/h (25mph). It can be dangerous if
the car in front of mine suddenly decreases
speed.
6. Interpreting the Perception I have to watch out for the moving car in front of
my car in case of a sudden decrease in speed. If it
decreases speed, I will push the lever down to
decrease the speed of my car too. But I have to
make sure the speed is not below 40km/h so that
the cruise control is not cancelled.
7. Evaluation of Interpretations The control cruise is working fine. Every time I
push the lever down in SET direction, the speed
decreases by 1.6km/h (1mph). It would be better
if the amount of speed decrease of every push
down is larger (about 5mph) so that it will be
safer when the car in front of mine suddenly
decreases speed.

B. Include drawing of existing navigation system on dashboard (use PDF File with
labels).

C. ONE paragraph description of new and improved feature for your navigation system.
Include reference source.
