TOPIC: Effects of lifestyle of the human function of the respiratory and circulatory system

OBJECTIVES:

 Cite factors that effects of harmful substances on the circulatory system

 Identify the diseases affecting the circulatory system

STRATEGY:

 Visual clues
 Instructional conversation
 Word games

CONCEPT:

DISEASES AFFECTING THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

 1.ANEMIA- the diseases result from aa decreased number of blood cells or decreased amount of
hemoglobin in the red blood cells.
 2.LEUKEMIA- this the type of cancer characterized by an abnormal production of white blood
cells.
 3.SEPTICEMIA- THIS IS ALSO KNOWN AS the blood poisining and caused by the spread of
microorganisms and toxins through the blood.
 4.ATHEROSCLEROSIS AND HEART ATTACK – occurs when the arteries become narrowand blood
cannot flows as well as they should. This is the cause of accumulation of plaques, caused by the
fatty matter, and even cholesterol or calcium, that build up within the arteries.
 5. CONGESTIVE HEARTH failure- is a common, disabling, and potentially deadly condition. It is
characterizedby the weakening of the hearth muscles rendering it unable to pump necessary
amount of blood into the system, resulting into the immediate death of patient.
 TWO TYPES OF HEARTH FAILURE
 A. ACUTE HEARTH FAILURE- characterized by the rapid onset of the conditions;
 B. CHRONIC HEARTH FAILURE- long duration
 6. HYPERTENSION( HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE)- caused by high pressure or tension in the arteries
such that the flow of blood against the artery wall becomes too much
 7. Stroke- this is a condition in which the brain cells suddenly die because of lack of oxygen. It
occurs when the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain is suddenly blocked or stopped.
 TWO TYPES OF STROKE
 A. ischemis stroke-whrein the blood clot forms and block the flow of blood in the brain, and
 B.Hemorrhagic stroke, wherein the blood vein ruptures and hemorrhages, filling the space
between the brain and the skull with blood. This type is also called cerebral hemorrhage.

DISEASES AFFECTING THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

 1. NOSEBLEEDING- occurs when the nasal membranes dry up and crack. It is very common
when the temperature of the day is very warm.
 2. ALLERGIC RHINITIS- this form of allergy which causes the inflammation of the nasal
tissues. The immune system of the body reacts to some intruders such as pollen grains, dust
mites molds or maybe even smoke or strong odor.
 ASTHMA- ALSso caused by allergic reactions to irritants. This is characterized by periodic
episodes of contractions of the bronchial muscle which is restrict air movement.
 4. Bronchitis- refers to the inflammation of the bronchi caused by bacteria or viruses.
 5.PNEUMONIA- This involves the inflammation of the lungs caused by bacteria or viruses in
the microscopic air sacs called alveoli.
 6. Emphysema- this is a chronic pulmonary diseases which results in the progressive
destruction of the air sacs in the lungs and the loss of the respiratory membrane for oxygen
exchange.
 7. LUNG CANCER- also known as the carcinoma of the lungs, and caused by the uncontrolled
growth of cell tissues in the lungs.
 8. TUBERCOLUSIS- (TB) is an infectious disease that is caused by bacterium called “
mycobacterium tuberculosis” .

ASSIGNMENT:
Directions: read about the top killer diseases that are related to the circulatory and
respiratory system.

Check on some websites for your data.

1. Who are the most susceptible to these diseases: women, men or children.
2. 2. At what age range are they mostly observed?
3. What factors generally affect the onset of these diseases?
Write your answers in your notebook.
