Grandma Climbs a Tree (summary)

4 marks
This poem is written by Ruskin Bond.

In this poem, the poet expresses how an old woman keeps her childish habit

and desire in her old age. The poet calls his grandma as genius because she could

12
climb trees even at the age of sixty two (62). Ever since her childhood, she had this

gift. She found happiness on a tree than in a lift.

The family members, neighbours and well-wishers told her to stop climbing the

trees. They told her to lead a graceful life in old age but grandma laughed and said

she would grow disgracefully. She learnt to climb trees from her brother at an early

age of six (6). One day, when her family members were in town, she climbed the tree

but could not come down, somehow she was rescued. The doctor advised her a week

bed rest, she felt it was like in hell. After recovery, she told her son that she wanted

a house on the tree top. Her son immediately started the work and made a beautiful

house with windows and a door. She was given food and wine. Sitting there, she

used to eat and drink with her grandson and lived there happily.

MEMORIZATION OF POEM

The quality of mercy is not strain'd;

It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives, and him that takes.
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes

The throned monarch better than his crown.

His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway;

It is enthroned in the heart of kings;

It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God's
When mercy seasons justice.

William Shakespeare

BLIND BOY

O say what is that thing call'd light,

Which I must ne'er enjoy.
What are the blessings of the sight,
O tell your poor blind boy!

You talk of wondrous things you see,

You say the sun shines bright;
I feel him warm, but how can he
Or make it day or night?

My day or night myself I make,

When'ver I sleep or play;
And could I ever keep awake
With me `twere always day.

With heavy sighs I often hear

You mourn my hapless woe;
But sure with patience I can bear
A loss I ne'er can know.

Then let not what I cannot have

My cheer of mind destroy :
Whilst thus I sing, I am a king,
Although a poor blind boy.
