1.4 If P is a force and x a length, what are the dimensions (in the FLT system) of (a)

dP/dx, (b) d3P/dx3, and (c) ∫ P dx?

1.6 If V is a velocity, l a length, and v a fluid property having dimensions of L2T-1,

which the following combinations are dimensionless: (a) Vlv, (b) Vl/v, (c) V2v, (d)

V/lv?

1.8 The force, P, that is exerted on spherical patricle moving slowly through a liquid is

given by the equation

P = 3ΠµDV

Where µ is a fluid property (viscoity) having dimensions of FL-2T. D is the particle

diameter, and V is a particle velocity. What are the dimensions of the constant, 3Π?,

would you classify this equation as a general homogeneous equation?

1.20 Water flows from a large drainage pipe at arate of 1200 gal/min. What is this

volume rate of flow in (a) m3/s, (b) liters/min, and, (c) ft3/s?

1.22 A certain object weight 300 N at the earth’s surface. Determine the mass of the

object (in kilograms) and its weight (in newtons) when located on a planet with an

acceleration of gravity equal to 4.0 ft/s2.

1.28 A liquid when poured into a graduated cylinder is found of weight 8 N occupying a

volume 0f 500 ml (milliliters). Determine its spesific weight, density, and spesific

gravity.
Answer:

1.4 (a) dP/dx = F/L = [FL-1]

(b) d3P/dx3 = F/L3 = [FL-3]

(c) ∫ P dx = [FL]

1.6 (a) Vlv = [LT-1][L][L2T-1] = [L4T-2]

(b) Vl/v = [LT-1][L]/[L2T-1] = [L0T0]

(c) V2v = [LT-1]2[L2T-1] = [L4T-3]

(d) V/lv = [LT-1]/[L][L2T-1] = [L-2]

1.8 P = 3ΠµDV

[F] = [3Π][FL-2T][L][LT-1]

[F] = [3Π][F]

[3Π] = tidak punya dimensi dan pertanyaan tersebut ialah persamaan homogen.

1.20 Flowrate = (1500 gal/min)[6,309 x 10-5 m3/s/(gal/min)]

= 9,46 x 10-2 m3/s

1 liter = 10-3 m3

Flowrate = (9,46 x 10-2 m3/s)(103 liters/m3)(60 s/min)

= 5680 liters/min

1.22 Mass = weight/g

= 300 N/(9.81 m/s2) = 30.6 kg

For g = 4 ft/s2

weight = (30.6 kg)(4 ft/s2)(0.3048 m/ft)

Weight = 37.3 N

1.28 Spesific weight = weight/volume = 8N/[(0.500 l)(10-3 m3/l)] = 16 kN/m3

Density = spesific weight/g = [(16 x 103 N/m3)/9.81 m/s2] = 1.63 x 103 kg/m3

Spesific gravity = Density/Densiti H2O 40C = 1.63 x 103 kg/m3/(103 kg/m3) = 1.63
