WHAT IS THIS MODULE ALL ABOUT?

Students like you need to be active every day in order to cope with everyday
activities and academic stress especially at school. You are bombarded with lessons to
study, requirements to accomplish, exams to pass, and classmates and professors to
deal with. Often times these activities will lead you to experiencing stress which influences
your mood, behavior, and health. For that reason, coping with stress needs to be your
utmost priority, particularly to think of creative ways on how to deal with it. You might want
to consider involving yourself into or playing Bowling as a physical activity.

Bowling can be in a form of recreational activity or a competitive sport where you

will only throw a bowling ball down a lane with the intention of knocking down a set of
pins. This sport helps you burn calories while having fun. Additionally, it is believed that
bowling provides exciting opportunities to unwind, or simply have a good time. For first-
time bowlers, you might feel anxious whenever everyone is watching, and might not be
able to hit the pins. Do not let this feeling stop you from having a good time. Let this
module help you.

Bowling is a sport that requires knowing the rules of the game, its terminology,
etiquette, technique, and attitude in order to develop proficiency at it.

Different Types of Bowling

25

1. Ten-pin bowling The most popular type of bowling that uses ball with holes used
for gripping. It also uses tall pins.

2. Duckpin bowling A variation of bowling that uses a ball smaller than ten-pin and
lack finger holes. The pins are shorter and lighter which makes
it difficult to achieve strikes.

3. Candlepin bowling The ball is smaller than duckpin, and uses a pin that looks like
a candle.

4. Nine-pin bowling Played primarily in Europe and uses 9 pins only.

5. Five-pin bowling Played in Canada and uses 5 pins only.

Basic Etiquette in Bowling

Like other sports, Bowling requires proper conduct and profound respect towards
the game and the opponents. The following are highly observed in playing the said sport:

1. You are not allowed to disturb a bowler who is ready to bowl.

2. If you want to secure your ball from the rock, do not walk in front of a bowler who
is ready to bowl.

3. When both of the bowler on the adjacent lanes are ready to bowl, the one on the
right should always be permitted to bowl first.

4. When your turn comes, be at your post and be ready to bowl.

5. After you deliver the ball and note of the result, turn and walk back immediately to
the rear of the runway, and stay in your approach lane.

6. Control your temper. Public display of anger disturbs fellow bowler and distracts
your efficiency.

How to bowl?

1. The Stance

• You hold the ball with both hands in front of the body.
• Your feet are slightly spread apart, knee slightly bent, one foot slightly ahead
of the other, weight are distributed evenly.
• Your non-working hand should support most of the weight of the ball. The ball
is gripped with the thumb in a 12 o’clock position.

2. The Approach – The approach is a series of steps in smooth and rhythmical manner
and will end with a slide and follow through as the ball is released.

Four step approach

• First - Step right foot forward, for right-handed bowler and left for left-handed
bowler, at the same time pushing ball into swing.
28

• Second – Step left foot forward then bring your arm to a down swing. During
the down swing, the opposite arm will go out to the side for balance and at
the completion of the step the ball will be near the ball-side leg.

• Third – Step right foot forward. The ball continues into the backswing and
will be at the top of the back swing at the completion of the step.

• Fourth – Slide left foot and bring your right foot across left in rear. As the
ball swings forward, the ball-side leg moves behind the bowler with the foot
rolling on its side. The ball is released as it passes the ankle of the slide
foot.

Five step approach

• First – Step left foot forward without swing the bowling ball.

• Second – with your right foot stepping forward, with the ball on your right
hand, push the ball into swing at the same.

• Third - Step left foot forward then bring your arm to a down swing.
During the down swing, the opposite arm will go out to the side for balance
and at the completion of the step the ball will be near the ball-side leg.

• Fourth – Step right foot forward. The ball continues into the backswing
and will be at the top of the back swing at the completion of the step.

• Fifth – Slide left foot and bring your right foot across left in rear. As the
ball swings forward, the ball-side leg moves behind the bowler with the
foot rolling on its side. The ball is released as it passes the ankle of the slide
foot.

Duckpin Bowling Scoring

Since Ten-pin bowling is now scored electronically, duckpin bowling scoring will
be given emphasis here. In the ten-pin bowling the player is allowed to throw two balls in
each frame, while in duckpin bowling you are allowed to throw tree balls in every frame.
Perfect score of bowling is 300. In scoring all you have to do is to add all the pins knocked
down in every throw per frame. Just a simple addition. Here are some terms that you
need to learn as a beginner:

Strike.

When all ten pins are knocked down with the first ball, the player is given 10 points
plus a bonus of whatever is scored with the next two balls. In this way, the points
scored for the two balls after the strike are counted twice because the points earned
from the last two balls will also be the score for the first and second ball of the next frame.

Spare.

When all ten pins are knocked down after the second ball of a frame. A player
achieving a spare is awarded ten points plus a bonus of whatever is scored with the
the third ball. In this way, the points scored for the third ball are counted twice because
the points obtained from the last ball will also be the score for the first ball of the next
frame.

Break.

When all ten pins are knocked down after the third ball of a frame. A player is
awarded 10 points.

Frame.

One-tenth of a game. Each square on score sheet is one frame. In each frame a
player is given three balls to throw.

Gutter ball. Delivery which rolls off the lane into the gutter.

Sample scoring:
• Frame 1, ball 1: 10 pins knocked down (strike)
• Frame 1, ball 2: 4 pins knocked down (bonus 1)
31

• Frame 2, ball 1: 4 pins knocked down

• Frame 1, ball 3: 3 pins knocked down (bonus 2)
10 7 8

17
10+4+3=17 4+3+1=8
17+8 = 25

• Frame 2, ball 2: 3 pins knocked down

• Frame 2, ball 3: 1 pin knocked down
• Frame 3, ball 1: 7 pins knocked down
• Frame 3, ball 2: 3 pins knocked down (spare)
• Frame 3, ball 3: 2 pins knocked down (bonus)
10 7 8 35 2 10

25
17 37 47
25+10=35 2+6+2=10
35+2=37 37+10=47
• Frame 4, ball 1: 2 pins knocked down
• Frame 4, ball 2: 6 pins knocked down
• Frame 4, ball 3: 2 pins knocked down (break)

Activity 2Add “mo to”

Instruction.
