Learning Activity no. 3

MEASURE OF LENGTH, VOLUME, AND WEIGHT

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this experiment, the students are expected to:

1. Compare beam balance scales, digital balance, with analytical weighing scales
2. Determine the accuracy of non-calibrated measuring devices
3. Convert different units of measurement and apply in pharmaceutical calculations.

INTRODUCTION
Illustrate and describe 4 measuring devices for each measurement type.

A. Length

B. Volume

C. Weight
RELATED QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:

1. What are the SI base units of the following?

Length =
Weight =
Volume =

2. Comparing mass values obtained from different weighing device, which balance
(triple- beam, digital balance, analytical balance) provides the more precise
measurement? Explain.

3. Which piece of glassware would give you a more accurate volume measurement
of liquid: the beaker, the Erlenmeyer flask or the graduated cylinder?

4. When a liquid is in the graduated cylinder, how will you read the measurement of
the volume? Illustrate and explain.
5. Complete the table below. Show your solution below for each item.

10 ml cc L uL

2.37 L mL Pint Minims

1 pint mL uL fluidounce

1286 cm m inch ft

55 kg lb g mg
6. Practice Problems:
Direction: Show the solution and box your final answer.
Strictly NO ERASURES.

a. How many grams of nitroglycerin are there in 60 tablets if each tablet contains
1/100 gr of nitroglycerin?

b. If a cough syrup is to be taken three times a day, and if 180mL are to be

consumed in 4 days, how many tbsp., should be prescribed for each dose?

c. An oral medication contains 3.4 g of medication in 24 fl. oz. Calculate the

quantity of medication, in milligrams, present in each 5-mL dose.

d. An intravenous solution contains 300 µg of a drug substance in each milliliter.

How many milligrams of the drug would the patient receive from an
intravenous infusion of a liter of the solution?

e. Pharmacist purchased 5 gal of alcohol. At different times, 2 pints, 2 gal, 8

fluidounces and ½ gal were used. What volume, in fluidounces, remained?
