The Region in

the Nation
2

The Region
The region defines the nation because it
characterizes the diversity of the
Philippines.
The region not only points to a Filipino’s
physical place of origin; it also defines
one’s linguistic, historical, and
indigenous background.
3

The Region
These regions reflect the diversity of an
individual Filipino’s make-up.
The Filipino People Map published in
1974 shows that while a vast area of
the country was effectively
Christianized, a good number of
concentrated locales remains
indigenous in faith practices.
4

The Region
In terms of movement, regionality
(being defined as a region or as
belonging to a particular geographic
grouping) compels some of our
kababayans to move from one locality
to another.
5

The Region
This aforementioned movement from
the regions to the centers of powers
and commerce also defines the
nation-region dynamic, and often
paints a gloomy picture of how the
center continues to marginalize the
periphery.
6

The Region
Literature participates in making sense
of this peculiar Filipino experience by
dramatizing how this nation-region
dynamic is imagined and internalized.
