Calcium Chloride Uses in Drilling Fluids

This product data sheet provides information about calcium chloride flakes and granules used in drilling fluid systems. Calcium chloride is used as a soluble weighting agent to increase the density of water-based drilling fluids and brines. It can also be used to prevent clay hydration and adjust the activity of water in oil-based drilling fluids. Calcium chloride has a bulk density of 2.2 g/cm3 and reaches saturation in water at 11.6 ppg, producing an irritant brine. Proper safety gear is required when handling and mixing calcium chloride due to the heat released and its ability to damage skin and leather.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Higher brine densities can be obtained by blending
saturated Calcium Chloride brine (or Granules)
with saturated Calcium Bromide brine at 14.2 ppg,
Appearance Crystalline Granules reaching 15.0 ppg (1.80 sg) by adding Calcium
Chloride Granules to saturated Calcium Bromide.

Calcium Chloride is supplied in 25 kg sealed polythene
Melting Point 770°C (1,439°F)) sacks and should be stored in a dry location.

Solubility Soluble in water

HSE

Calcium Chloride is an irritant and can be hazardous.

APPLICATION
Care is required when mixing because Calcium
Chloride Powder, Granules or flakes generate heat
For water-based drilling fluids, Calcium Chloride is used when added to water, and Calcium Chloride brine
as a soluble weighting agent and as a source of Calcium attacks leather, so rubber safety boots should be worn.
to prevent clay hydration in Calcium inhibitive systems. The following safety wear, as recommended in the
MSDS, should be used when mixing Calcium Chloride:
For oil-based drilling fluids, Calcium Chloride is used for
adjusting the activity of the water phase (water phase - Standard PPE
salinity). - Rubber Safety Boots
- Chemical Splash Goggles
Calcium Chloride brine is also used as a completion, - Respiratory Mask
work-over or packer fluid. Refer to Calcium Chloride - Chemical Apron
Brine Tables to determine the concentration required to - Chemical Gauntlets
obtain the required brine density.
Make sure crews handling and mixing Calcium Chloride
are familiar with the MSDS, know the corrective actions
to take, and know where eye-wash bottles are located.
