An absolute value tells the distance of a number from 0 in the number line
whether the direction is going to the right or the left. It is always positive.
Example:
5 5
-7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
In the example, the absolute value of “5” is 5. This is the distance of 5 from zero.
The direction is going to the right.
The other example is “-5”. To the left from zero, the distance is 5. So the absolute
value of “-5” is also 5. Remember that absolute value is always positive, since it
only tells the distance of the number from zero in the number line.
The absolute value of a number is written with two bars or straight lines between
the number/s. You will know that you have to express a number in its absolute value if
there are bars between the numbers.
Example 1

-7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
*The direction in the number line is going to the right. The distance of 9 to zero is
9, so the absolute value is 9.
*Since 3 is a negative number, the direction in the number line is going to the left.
The distance from zero is 3, so the absolute value of -3 is 3.
*In this example, the number is 0, so there is no distance involved, that is why
The absolute value is also zero.
*Notice that if you want a number to be in its absolute value, it is in between bars
but when it is change to its absolute value, there are no more bars. So numbers with
bars in between indicate that you have to change it to its absolute value.
*Also take note that the answer is always positive, since absolute value is the
distance of the given number to zero whatever is the direction of the arrow in the
number line.

c. I3.6I = 3.6
d. I-4.7I = 4.7
e. I-8.9I = 8.9
*The rule in getting the absolute numbers of decimals is the same. The answer is
always positive.
Example 3

In I9-4I in the number line, you start the arrow in +9 and move to the left 4
times since we are subtracting the number (-4), so the answer is 5.
