INTRODUCTION TO
ALGEBRA
I. Introduction
Algebra is the branch of Mathematics that uses alphabetical letters to find unknown
numbers. These letters are also called variables. The values which are known in the given
expression such as numbers are called constants. Algebra involves the simple operation of
mathematics like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division involving both constant as
well as variables.

II. Learning Objectives

At the end of this module the students will be able to :
• Evaluate expressions for given values of a variable.
•Use properties of operations to write equivalent expressions.

III. Learning Activities

Example 1
Find the value of t, if t + 15 = 30
•Solution•
t = 30 – 15
t = 15
To check , substitute the value of variable(t)
t+15=30
15+15=30
30=30

Example 2
Find the value of y, when, 9y = 63
•Solution•
Divide both sides by 9;
y = 63/9
y=7
Check
9y=63
9(7)=63
63=63

Example 3
If 21= b/7, find b:
•Solution•
Cross multiply:
b = 21 x 7
b = 147
Check
21=b/7
21=147/7
21=21

Example 4
Find the value of x, when x-4=8
•Solution•
x= 8+4
x=12
Check
x-4=8
12-4=8
8=8

Example 5
Find the value of u, when 5x+3=13
•Solution•
5x=13-3
5x=10
5x/5=10/5
x=2
Check
5x+3=13
5(2)+3=13
10+3=13
13=13
