 EVAPORATION
• Evaporation is a phenomenon by which liquid
convert into vapour (gaseous state).At any
temperature below its boiling point.
 FACTORS EFFECTING
EVAPORATION
• DEFINATION - The rate of evaporation
increase by following factor’s –
1. Increase in surface area.
2. Increase in temperature.
3. Decrease in humidity.
4. Increase in wind speed.
 INCREASE IN SURFACE AREA

• If the surface area is increased the rate of

evaporation is also increased.
 INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE

• If the temperature is increased , the kinetic

energy of the particles of water is also
increased , so the rate of evaporation is also
increased.
 DECREASE IN HUMIDITY
• Humidity is the amount of water vapours
present in air . The air around us cannot have
more than a definite amount of water at a
given temperature . So on decreasing the
humidity , the rate of evaporation is increased.
 INCREASE IN WIND SPEED
• On increasing the wind speed the particles of
water vapours move away with the wind so ,
amount of water vapours decrease in the air
to increase the rate of evaporation .

1. COOLING EFFECT
2. TO WEAR COTTON CLOTHES IN SUMMER
3. IN DRYING CLOTHES
4. IN AC AND REFRIGERATION
 COOLING EFFECT
• During evaporation the particles of liquid
absorb the energy from the surrounding to
regain the energy lost energy lost , This
absorption of energy from the surroundings
make the surroundings cold . Eg –
• A desert cool better on a hot dry day
• The water kept in earthen port become cool
during summer.
TO WEAR COTTON CLOTHES
IN SUMMER
• In cotton clothes , sweat is absorbed faster
and exposed it to the atmosphere for the easy
evaporation and hence to feel better we wear
cotton clothes in summer.
 IN DRYING CLOTHES
• Clothes dry faster when the rate of
evaporation is high , but in humid atmosphere
the clothes do not dry so fast.
IN AC AND REFRIGERATION
• It is important also in air conditioning ,
referigeration ,and distilling . Substance are
evaporated in a partial vaccum to speed
evaporation or to prevent deterioration by
heat.
