WORD PROBLEMS

Jane is 4 times as old as her daughter. In 20 years, Jane will be twice as old as her
daughter. Find their present age.

                                                         AGE NOW                 AFTER 20 YEARS

JANE                                                     4x                                  4x+20
HER DAUGHTER                                   x                                    x+20

4x+20 = 2(x+20)
4x+20 = 2x + 40
4x - 2x = 40 - 20
2x = 20
2 2
X = 10 Jane is 20 years old and her daughter is 10 years old.
It takes a boat 1.5 hours to travel 24 miles downstream and 2 hours to travel
upstream. What is the speed of the boat in still water and of the current of the river?

Distance Rate Time

Downstream 24 x+y 1.5
Upstream 24 x-y 2

Let x = speed of the boat in still water

Let y = current of the river

Downstream: (Rate)(Time) = Distance

x + y(1.5) = 24
½ [x+y(2) = 24]
x + y = 12

Upstream: (Rate)(Time) = Distance

x – y(2) = 24
1
[x – y (1.5) = 24
2

x – y = 16

(x + y = 12) + (x - y + = 16) = 2x = 28
2x 28
=
2 2
x = 14

The speed of the boat in still water is 14 miles per hour

x + y = 12
14 + y = 12
14 + 12 = y
2=y

The current of the river is 2 miles per hour.

A CESSNA 152 aircraft is scheduled for an inspection after it has flown for a total of
50 hrs. Working together, Junest and Jan can finish inspecting the aircraft in 32 hours.
How long would it take for each of them to finish the inspection working alone?
(Assume that Junest and Jan work at the same speed).

Time
Junest 1 1
T1 32

Jan 1
T2

1 1 1
+ =
x1 x2 32
(32x) 1 + (32x) 1 = (32x) 1
x1 x2 32
32 + 32 = x
x = 64

It would take 64 hours for each of them to finish the inspection working alone.

A rectangle has its area equal to 18 square units and perimeter equal to 18 units. What is the
dimension of the rectangle?

Area lxw 18
Perimeter 2(l + w) 18

Let l = length of the rectangle

Let w = width of the rectangle

P = 2(l +w) A = lw
18 = 2(l + w) 18 = lw
18 2(l + w) 18 = l(9 – l)
=
2 2 18 = 9l = l2
18 l2 – 9l + 18 =0
=l+w
2
w = 9 -1
Use quadratic formula:
l2 – 9l + 18 = 0
a=1 b=9 c = 18

−b ± √ b2−4 ac
l=
2a

2
−(−9)± √ ( 9 ) −4(1)(18)
l=
2(1)

9+3
l=
2

l1 = 9 + 3
2
l1 = 6

l2 = 9 - 3
2

l2 = 3

w=9-1
w = 9 – (6)
w=3
The dimension of the rectangle is 6 units by 3 units.
