UCE609 Design of Steel Structures – I

(Bolted Connections)
Use ordinary grade 4.6 bolts, unless given otherwise; Assume any missing data suitably
1. Find the maximum force which can be transferred through the double cover butt joint
shown in Figure 1. Find the efficiency of the joint also. M24 of bolt and 4.6 and Fe
410 plates are used.
2. Design a lap joint to connect two plates ISF 300 x10 and ISF 300 x 12 to transfer a
factored load of 260 kN. Check the designed connection for rupture of the plate. (ISF
= Indian Standard Flats).
3. Repeat Q2 by designing a) Single cover butt joint b) Double cover butt joint. The
factored load is 480 kN. All other data remains same. Cover plates are 10 mm thick.
Use M16 bolts. Check the designed connection for rupture of the plate.
4. Design a tension splice to connect 2 plates 400 x 16 mm and 400 x 20 mm to transmit
a factored load of 750 kN. Use M20 bolts. Threads do not lie in shear plane.
5. For the connection shown in the Figure 2 below:
a) Calculate the maximum load that can be transmitted by the bolted connection of the
double angle section (ISA 150x150x10 placed back to back). All bolts are M20. The
pitch and end distance are 60 mm and 40 mm respectively.
b) For the safe load calculated in Q5a), check the safety of the connection between
the T-bracket (gusset plate) and flange of I-section (thickness = 10.8 mm). All bolts
are M16, grade 5.6 bolts. There are 2 lines of bolts; 4 bolts in each line. The pitch and
gauge are 60 mm; end and edge distances are 40 mm.
6. Design the bolted connections for Figure 3. All double angles are placed back to
back. Gusset plate is 16 mm thick. (Hence for single angle, say of 110 kN case,
bearing thickness will be min (6, 16) = 6 mm)
