Example: Column base connection under axial

compression
This worked example deals with the design of a column base subjected to a
compressive axial load. The step by step design procedure given in Section 4
of SN037 is followed throughout.

Basic data

• Base plate steel grade S235: fyp = 235 N/mm²

• Foundation concrete class C25/30: fck = 25 N/mm²
• Column axial force Nj,Ed = 1500 kN
• Column section HEA 360
Height hc = 350 mm

Width bfc = 300 mm

Web thickness twc = 10 mm
Flange thickness tfc = 17,5 mm
• Dimensions of the foundation : unknown
• Partial factors
steel γM0 = 1,0
concrete γc = 1,5

Note: The values of the partial factors are specified in the relevant National
Annex.

Design compressive strength of concrete

Concrete design compressive strength: fcd = αcc fck / γc EN 1992-1-1

where : fck = 25 N/mm2 § 3.1.6 (1)

SN037
The value of αcc is given in the National Annex. Its recommended value is:
Table 4.1
αcc = 1,0.
Created on Tuesday, December 04, 2007

The concrete design strength becomes:

fcd = 1 × 25 / 1,5 = 16,7 N/mm2

Foundation bearing strength

The value of the foundation material coefficient is: βj = 2/3.
SN037
The foundation dimensions being unknown, take (Ac1/Ac0)0,5 = α = 1,5.
Table 4.1
The foundation bearing strength becomes: fjd = αβjfcd = fcd = 16,7 N/mm² .

Estimation of the base plate area

An estimate of the required base plate area is given as the larger of the
following two values:

2
1 ⎛ N j, Ed ⎞
2
1 ⎛ 1500000 ⎞
1) Ac0 = ⎜⎜ ⎟⎟ : Ac0 = ⎜ ⎟ = 76835 mm2
hcbfc ⎝ f cd ⎠ 350 × 300 ⎝ 16,7 ⎠

N j,Ed 1500000
2) Ac0 = : Ac0 = = 89820 mm 2 , which is larger.
f cd 16,7

Choice of the base plate type

Created on Tuesday, December 04, 2007

As the estimate for Ac0 = 89280 mm 2 < 0,95×350×300 = 99750 mm² a “short
projection” plate will be satisfactory.

Suitable plan dimensions for the “short projection” base plate are chosen as
follows:
SN037
bb = 340 mm > bfc + 2 tfc = 300 + 2 × 17,5 = 335 mm Figure 3.1
hb = 390 mm > hc + 2 tfc = 350 + 2 × 17,5 = 385 mm Figure 3.2
which gives Ac0 = 340 × 390 = 132600 mm2 > 89280 mm²

Verification of the bearing resistance

For a “short projection” base plate, the value of the additional bearing width,
c, is given by:

− B − B 2 − 4 AC SN037 §4
c=
2A

Where: A = +2 SN037
B = –(bfc – twc + hc) = -(300 – 10 + 350) = -640 mm Table 4.1

C = 0,5 Nj,Ed / fjd – (2bfc tfc + 4 tfc2 + 0,5 hc twc – tfc twc)
= 0,5×1500000/16,7 – (2×300×17,5 + 4×17,52 + 0,5×350×10 – 17,5×10
= +31610 mm2
Created on Tuesday, December 04, 2007

640 − 640 2 − 4 × 2 × 31610

The additional width is: c = = 61,0 mm

Check against overlapping of the T-stub areas:

c ≤ (hc – 2tfc)/2 = 157,5 mm OK
Check for adequate base plate width:
c ≤ (bp – tw)/2 = 165 mm OK

The bearing resistance is obtained from:

Nj,Rd = (2 Ac0,f + Ac0,w) fjd

Where: Ac0,f = (300 + 2 × 20) (20 + 17,5 + 61) = 33490 mm2

Ac0,w = [350 – 2 × (17,5 + 61)] (2 × 61 + 10) = 25476 mm2

Therefore:
Nj,Rd = (2 × 33490 + 25476) × 16,7 / 10-3 = 1544 kN
This material is copyright - all rights reserved. Use of this document is subject to the terms and conditions of the Access Steel Licence Agreement

Then : Nj,Ed = 1500 kN < Nj,Rd = 1544 kN OK

Determination of the base plate thickness

The plate thickness shall fulfil the following condition :

c
t p ≥ t p,min =
f y / (3 f jd γ M0 )

61
tp, min = = 28,2 mm
235 / (3 × 16,7 × 1,0)
Adopt a base plate thickness: tp = 30 mm
