INTRODUCTION
The plastic materials which are made using renewable biomass sources like corn starch,
wood, recycled food wastes, vegetable oils and fats, agricultural by-products, etc. are called
Bio Plastics. They are also made from the used plastics by the action of microbes on them.

1930’s 2020
Sudden increase in the usage of plastics, and their utility Mostly all the current plastics that we see in our day to
and significance have become so incredible that it has day life are petroleum-derived and are largely
become so hard to imagine current existence without non-biodegradable which likewise aggregates in harming
plastics. the climate.

As per the 2004 data, bioplastics approximately comprise

of 0.2% of the total global polymer market and is
increasing since then.

2004

There is another problem with petroleum-based plastics that the petroleum resources are being used
up at a very high rate that all the sources of petroleum which are known on Earth will have been
vanished before the ending of the 21st century. Therefore there is a high requirement for the
bioplastics.
1) Plastics are non-bio durable
substances and are therefore
contaminants for the environment. They
cannot be converted back to their
original state or into any organic
IMPACT substance. It also pollutes the water
bodies and the living organisms living in

by the cracking
of petroleum, and this process may
lead to the emission of some carbon
PLASTIC compounds that are harmful for the
environment.
3) Since plastic is produced by the
cracking of petroleum, this important
resource is being used up and will
eventually deplete in 2050s.
We must give attention to this problem
as soon as possible and use bio
plastics as an alternative to preserve
our future.

OF Protein Based plastic

BIOPLASTICS
Aliphatic Polyesters

Organic Polyethene
STARCH BASED
PLASTICS

Starch is found in
seeds and in the
tubers and roots of
the plants. Most of

derived from the
corn.
USED IN
• food additives

Used as reinforcement in
CELLUOLSE composite materials

Cellulose fibers are

hydrophilic in nature ,so it is

PROTEIN BASED BIOPLASTIC

Research shows Due to a lot of

Can also be

Not only ecological

BIOPLASTIC are not toxic for
external uses therefore can be
used in a variety of products
Unlike plastics they do not
produce a net increase in
