BIOTC 113 Long Quiz No. 1 First Sem.

, 2021-2022

Instructions: Do not do the following while the test is on-going:

(1) opening lecture notes, modules, or books
(2) browsing internet websites to search for answers
(3) taking photographs of answers and sending such to classmates
(4) leaving the conference or closing the camera.

Write your answers clearly on a white bond paper. Submit a photograph of your answer sheets converted
in pdf format. Good luck.

Test I. IDENTIFICATION. Identify what is described in each item. (1 pt each)

1. It refers to the species in a sample about which analytical information is sought.

2. The empirical determination of the relationship between a measured quantity and a known reference or
standard value. It is also used to establish analytical signal versus concentration relationships.
3. A large group of methods that all measure the electrical property of the system that is proportional to the
amount of substance in the sample.
4. The process of collecting a small portion of a material whose composition is representative of the bulk of the
material from which it was taken.
5. Paper produced from cellulose fibers that have been treated to eliminate inorganic species, thus leaving no
residue when ashed.
6. A container that provides a dry atmosphere for the cooling and storage of samples, crucibles, and precipitates.
7. An analytical balance with a capacity of 160 to 200 g and a precision of 0.1 mg.
8. The curved surface displayed by a liquid held in a vessel.
9. Apparent change in position of an object as a result of the movement of the observer that brings about
systematic errors in reading burets, pipets, and meters with pointers.
10. Reagents that have been specially purified for a particular use.

Test II. Answer as required.

1. Define or explain briefly the following: (3 pts)

a) interference b) replicate samples e) Assay
2. Differentiate between (a) qualitative and quantitative methods of analyses; and (b) gravimetric and titrimetric
Methods (3 pts)
3. Illustrate how calibration curve is prepared for quantitative analysis. (4 pts)

Test III. Problem Solving: Solve the following problems by showing the complete solutions. Observe rules in
operations involving significant figures.

1. Sea water contains an average of 1.08 x 103 ppm of Na+ and 270 ppm SO42-. Calculate
(a) the moar concentrations of Na+ and SO42- given the average density of seawater is 1.02 g/mL.
(b) the pNa and pSO4 for sea water.

2. Describe the preparation of the following solutions:

(a) 2.50 L of 18.0% (w/v) aqueous glycerol (C3H8O3, 92.1 g/mol).
(b) 750 mL of 6.00 M H3PO4 from the commercial reagent that is 85% H3PO4 (w/w) and has a specific
gravity of 1.69.

3. (a) Calculate the molar analytical concentration of benzoic acid (C6H5COOH) solution that is prepared by
dissolving 500.0 mg of solid benzoic acid in enough water to produce 1.50 L solution. (b) If the percent
dissociation is 15 %, calculate the equilibrium or species concentrations of [H+], [C6H5COO-], and
[C6H5COOH].

4. Exactly 0.1150 g of pure Na2CO3 (106.0 g/mol) was dissolved in 100.0 mL of 0.0396 M HClO4. The reaction
is represented by the following chemical equation:

Na2CO3 (aq) + HClO4 (aq) → NaClO4 (aq) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g) (unbalanced)
(a) What mass in grams of CO2 (44.0 g/mol) was evolved?
(b) What was the molarity of the excess reactant (HClO 4 or Na2CO3)? Assume there is no change in the
volume of solution when the mixture was prepared.
