Course Title: Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer

Course Objectives:
The course objectives are to introduce a basic knowledge of the phenomena of heat and mass transfer so as to develop the method for
solving a wide variety of practical engineering problems related to heat transfer phenomena and to provide the useful information
concerning of particular systems and processes.

Pre-requisites: Basic fundamental of Engineering Thermodynamics, Engineering Fluid Mechanics, Applied Mathematics.

Module I: Conduction 25
Descriptors/Topics
Introduction, mechanisms of heat flow, Fourier’s, Newton’s and Stefan Boltzmann’s Law, thermal conductivity of
solids, liquids and gases, factors influencing conductivity. conduction: general differential heat conduction
equation, thermal diffusivity, initial value and boundary conditions, steady state one-dimensional heat conduction,
composite systems in rectangular, cylindrical and spherical coordinates with and without energy generation,
thermal resistance concept; analogy between heat and electricity flow, thermal contact resistance, overall heat
transfer coefficient, critical thickness of insulation
Module II: Fins & Transient Conduction 20
Descriptors/Topics
Fins, heat transfer from extended surfaces, fins of uniform cross-sectional area; fins effectiveness and efficiency,
errors of measurement of temperature in thermometer wells.
Transient Conduction: Transient heat conduction, lumped capacitance method, time constant; unsteady state
heat conduction in one dimension only, Heisler charts
Module III: Forced Convection 20
Descriptors/Topics
Forced convection, basic concepts; hydrodynamic boundary layer, thermal boundary layer, analogy between
momentum and heat transfer in laminar & turbulent flow over a flat surface, mixed boundary layer
external flow, empirical heat transfer relations for flow over a flat plate, flow across a single cylinder and a sphere
internal flow, empirical heat transfer relations for flow through tubes and ducts, relation between fluid friction and
heat transfer,
Heat exchanger: introduction, types of heat exchangers, overall heat transfer co-efficient, fouling factor, LMTD
and NTU methods of heat exchanger design, heat exchanger problems
Module IV: Natural Convection
Descriptors/Topics 10
Natural convection, physical mechanism of natural convection; buoyant force, empirical heat transfer relations for
natural convection over vertical planes and cylinders, horizontal plates and cylinders, and sphere
Module V: Thermal Radiation 15
Descriptors/Topics: Planck’s distribution law, Wien’s displacement law, Stefan-Boltzmann’s relation,
Kirchhoff’s law, configuration factors, radiant interchange between black and grey surfaces, radiation shielding
solar radiation
Module VI: Condensation, Boiling and Mass transfer 10
Descriptors/Topics: Introduction to condensation phenomena; heat transfer relations for laminar film
condensation on vertical surfaces
Boiling heat Transfer: pool and flow boiling, boiling curve
Mass transfer: basic concepts, diffusion mass transfer, Fick’s law of diffusion, steady state molecular diffusion,
convective mass transfer
Student Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this course student will be able to:
 Explain the basic laws and fundamental concepts of heat and mass transfer.
 Demonstrate general knowledge of heat transfer [conduction, convection, radiation], and general knowledge of mass
transfer [molecular diffusion, convection.
 Analyse and design the experiments and experimental data related to Heat and Mass transfer.
 Devise and solve steady-state and transient problems in 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D.
 Evaluate and develop an alternative system designs based on technical and non-technical criteria.
Pedagogy for Course Delivery:
The course pedagogy will include lectures, numerical practice, case studies, seminars and presentations. It also includes discussion on
real life problems and demonstrations of heat and mass transfer.

List of Experiments:

1. To determine thermal conductivity of a brass rod.


2. To determine thermal conductivity of insulating powders.
3. To measure the thermal conductivity of liquid.
4. To determine the heat transfer coefficient for natural & forced convection from pin-fin.
5. To determine the surface heat transfer coefficient for heated vertical cylinder in natural convection.
6. To find the heat transfer coefficient in forced convection in a tube.
7. To determine the emissivity of gray body.
8. Experimental determination of Stefan Boltzmann constant.
9. To study and compare LMTD and effectiveness in parallel and counter flow heat exchangers.
10. To determine the total thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of the given composite wall.
11. To determine the effectiveness, LMTD and overall heat transfer coefficient for a shell & tube heat exchanger.
12. To analyse the heat transfer phenomena in drop-wise and film wise condensation.
