FAQs about temporary adjustments to DELTA Module Two due to COVID-19

1. The internet connection keeps dropping even though the technical tests were carried
out thoroughly. Can the assessed lesson still go ahead?
No, the lesson should not proceed without a stable broadband connection. Please see the minimal
requirements documents and the overarching assessment principle in the Guidelines document.

2. The observer/candidate/learners do not have a private quiet place to attend the

assessed lesson.
The lesson should not go ahead unless everyone attending the assessed lesson can do so from an
appropriate place. All attendees should understand this requirement before the assessment goes
ahead.

3. The candidate has mentioned that he is teaching from home and may have to check
in on his three-year-old daughter. Is this acceptable?
No, the candidate must be able to ensure there are no interruptions from other people in the
household to ensure they are able to teach to the best of their ability.

4. The remote observer cannot always hear or see the teacher they are observing. Can
the lesson go ahead?
The observer should be able to see and hear the teacher at all times and the lesson cannot take place
without this. Some suggestions to support this are:
• a person to change the position of the camera as necessary, or two cameras set up before the
lesson so the observer can see satisfactorily
• using a separate microphone
• one pair/group of learners close to a mic to be able to hear during group/pair work
• a connection between the observer and the person filming, so the observer can direct them
to what they need to see e.g. to zoom in on the whiteboard.

5. Can the candidate do their assessed lesson with a hybrid F2F/online class?
No. Currently, it is felt that this mode of teaching is unlikely to provide the best opportunity for
candidates to succeed. This decision will be reviewed regularly, and tutors and assessors will be
consulted as to changing practice.

6. Does the candidate need signed permission from all participants including learners for
live streaming of online or remote observations?
This will depend on the local and international laws. Candidates, with support from their centre,
should ensure they are compliant with any data protection regulations in their jurisdiction. If you do
require permission, and there are young learners in the classroom, then permission should be sought
from the legal guardian.

7. Can the externally assessed lesson be recorded and used by the candidate?
No. There are 2 principal reasons:
1. In order to maintain a fair assessment across all contexts of DELTA Module 2 delivery,
observers should not have the opportunity to re-watch any part of a lesson (as this cannot
happen in live face-to-face lessons).
2. Recordings could be altered or edited to give an unfair advantage to the candidate. This can
be avoided if all lessons are watched live and no recording is made.

NB The sole exception to this is in the case of the assessor’s connection failing during the assessed
lesson. However, please be aware there are strict controls on what is permissible in these instances.
Please see the minimum requirements documents for full details.

8. Can the candidate do a technical test-run before the online assessment with the
external assessor?
No, the external assessor should do the test run with the support of the centre. In order to maintain
impartiality, the assessor should not have any direct interactions and/or contact with the candidate
prior to the assessment.
