BY- Environmental and Social Impact Assessment

NAME - SUZEN PAWAR
MIS - 111814049
ABOUT - SAMRUDHHI MAHAMARG

▰ Government of Maharashtra has planned Nagpur Mumbai

Expressway (NMEW) which intends to divert and redistribute the
heavy traffic on existing corridors.
▰ The proposed NMEW is being implemented by Maharashtra State
Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) which will pass through 10
districts from Vidarbha through Marathwada to Konkan regions.
▰ The estimated land requirement of about 10,000 ha for developing
the 701.128 km of expressway will be met through land pooling
instead of traditional land acquisition method.
▰ The land pooling is a model where farmers and plot owners transfer
land ownership rights to the government or the developing agency
which develops the space by building roads and other infrastructure
EIA PROCESS

Screening Step 1
• It is the first stage of EIA which determines weather the proposed project requires an
EIA or not.

Scoping Step 2
• This stage identifies the key issues and the impact that should be further investigated.

Impact analysis Step 3

• The stage of EIA defines and predict likely environmental and social impacts of the
proposed project and evaluates it’s significance

Mitigation Step 4
• This stage in EIA recommends the action to reduce and avoid the potential adverse
environmental consequence of development activities
EIA PROCESS

Reporting Step 5
• The stage presents the result of EIA in the form of report to the decision making body and
other interested parties

Review of EIA Step 6

• It examines the adequacy and effectiveness of EIA report and provides the information
necessary for decision making

Decision making Step 7

• It decides whether the project is accepted, rejected or need further improvement.

Post monitoring Step 8

• It checks to ensure that the impact of the project do not exceed the legal
standards and implementation of mitigation measures are as in manner as
described in EIA report
Environmental Parameters Project Corridor

Terrain Maximum flat and small section of project road

passes through rolling terrain and hilly
Geology Area is covered by the Deccan Trap lava flows of
upper Cretaceous to lower Eocene age
Soil Type Prevailing soil type of the area is black cotton
Surface water bodies crossing/ along the 3 rivers and 59 local streams, 3 canals and 26
project road: River/Stream/ Pond or Ponds
discarded area filled with water
Ground Water Bodies along the Project 356 well/bore well, and 8 Hand pump
Road: HP/TW/Well
Surface and ground Water Quality Within permissible limit

Air Quality Within permissible limit

Noise Level Within permissible limit
Forest Along the Project Road 26.877 ha. Forest land required for Diversion.
Trees in non forest areas like agricultural Forest Land=399
land/private land Non Forest land =4910
POSITIVE IMPACTS

▰ savings in travel times

▰ reduced cargo delays – from faster vehicle speeds and reductions
in travel time;
▰ reduced vehicle operating costs – from improved riding surfaces;
▰ reduced road maintenance costs – from higher quality infrastructure;
▰ better and faster connectivity will bring the development in the
region
▰ reduction in exhaust emission
▰ reduced accidents
▰ improved access to the nearby growth centers
▰ new businesses, including that from increased passing trade
NEGATIVE IMPACTS

▰ loss of forest land about 26.877 ha.

▰ loss of 1858 ha. of non-forest land
▰ loss of trees about 5309 (399 in forest area and 4910
in non-forest area )
▰ loss of agricultural land
▰ a marginal reduction in aesthetic beauty
▰ diversion of Forest and Agriculture land
▰ acquisition of private land
▰ demolition of structure falling within the proposed
corridor
IMPACT AND MITIGATION MEASURES

Area Impacts Mitigation measures

Floral & fauna • Loss of flora & loss of habitat of • No tree shall be cut down beyond the toe line
avian fauna due to felling of trees of proposed cross section.
along the ROW. • Cooking fuel should be provided to
• Short term disturbance to avian construction workers to avoid cutting/felling of
fauna. trees for fuel wood.
• Replanting the trees
Rehabilitation & • Acquisition of agricultural land Adequate & equitable compensation,
resettlement which is the source of rehabilitation & resettlement measures for PAPs
sustenance of those families. are provided in RAP prepared for the project
• Demolition of houses & other
structures within ROW resulting
in displacement of people
Occupational • Health & safety related problems • Adequate safety measures complying to the
health & safety to construction workers due to occupational safety manuals will be adopted
inadequate health & safety to prevent accidents/hazards to the
measures construction workers
• Periodic health check-up of construction
workers will be done
Area Impacts Mitigation measures
Air Air pollution due to vehicular • Vehicular emission will be controlled through enforcement of
quality emission from road traffic. laws and public awareness.
• Truck parking lay-byes and bus bays will be provided at
required locations to facilitate smooth traffic flow.
• Regular monitoring of air quality at specified locations will be
conducted
Water • Increase of sediment load in • Sediment traps will be provided to reduce sediment load in
quality the run off from construction construction wastewater
sites and increase in turbidity • Proper sanitation facilities will be provided in construction
in receiving streams/water camp to prevent health related problems.
bodies
• Water pollution due to sewage
from construction camps.
Noise Increase in noise level due to • Construction camp and temporary labour sheds will be
level construction activities like located away from the immediate vicinity of the construction
operation of construction sites and major road traffic.
equipment & vehicular traffic. • Protective gears such as ear plugs etc. will be provided to
construction personnel exposed to high noise levels as
preventive measure.
• Low noise construction equipment will be used.
• It will be ensured that all construction equipment & vehicles
are in good working condition, properly lubricated &
maintained to keep noise within permissible limits.
• Stationary construction equipment will be placed sufficiently
away from inhabited areas and silence zones.
• Construction activities carried out near residential area will
be scheduled to the day time only so that minimum
disturbances are caused to people.
UNDERSTANDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS

▰ The project is yet to be completed so the environmental

loss on the time of construction and completion will be
different
▰ Repercussions of the drastic deforestation should be
properly addressed by employing proper measures on
revitalization of the green zones
▰ Disturbance to wild life that cannot be compensated
▰ Samruddhi mahamarg opens the option of land pooling
which has certain benefits at the part of Farmer
▰ It is necessary to assess the impacts of the project to
overcome the loss of resources and environment.
