THIRD TERM WEEK 6

Date: 27/06/2019 -03/06/2019 Subject: ICT

Period: 1
Name:Ebebe Amalachukwu Class: Basic 8 Average age: 12years
Duration of Lesson: 40minutes
Topic: Classification of Computers (By Size)
A.BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES (Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor)
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
 Classify computer by size
 Give examples of each size

B.INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:
Computer system, computer studies text book and projector.

C.PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

Students are familiar with history and functions of computers.

D.CONTENT:
1. Classification of computers by size
- Super computers
- Mainframe
- Mini computers
- Microcomputers
E.INTRODUCTION:

Classification refers to the way objects are grouped or categorized. Classification of Computer
system is required in order to fully appreciate the concept of Computing. Computers are classified in
different ways.

F.PRESENTATION (Step by step exposition of the material)

Step 1: Classification by Size
They include;
1. Super computers: These are fastest type of computer. Supercomputers are very expensive
and are employed for specialized applications that require immense amounts of mathematical
calculations.
They are used by large organizations. For example, weather forecasting requires a
supercomputer. Other uses of supercomputers include animated graphics, nuclear
energy research, and petroleum exploration.
1
2. Mainframe computers: A very large and expensive computer capable of supporting hundreds,
or even thousands, of users simultaneously. The computers are known as mainframe because
initially all its peripherals are mounted in a cabinet-type frame.
Banks, educational institutions & insurance companies use mainframe computers to
store data about their customers, students & insurance policy holders.
In some ways, mainframes are more powerful than supercomputers because they
support more simultaneous programs. But supercomputers can execute a single
program faster than a mainframe.
3. Mini computers: Minicomputers are small and inexpensive and are used by small businesses
& firms. In general, a minicomputer is a multiprocessing system capable of supporting from 4 to
about 200 users simultaneously.
Individual departments of a large company or organizations use Mini-computers for
specific purposes. For example, a production department can use Mini-computers for
monitoring certain production process.
Minicomputers are also called as “Midrange Computers”. These are small machines and
can be accommodated on a disk with not as processing and data storage capabilities as
super-computers & Mainframes.
4. Microcomputers: The term microcomputer is generally synonymous with personal computer
(PC), or a computer that depends on a microprocessor.

Desktop computers, laptops, personal digital assistant (PDA), tablets & smartphones are
all types of microcomputers. These computers are the cheapest among the other three
types of computers. The Micro-computers are specially designed for general usage like
entertainment, education and work purposes.

G.CONTEXTUALIZATION (of the material of the classroom situation):

The teacher uses the computer system and pictures of tools and machines made for each
category of computer to describe the topic.

H.STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT IN THE LESSON

The students are engaged with identifying the different sizes of computers and their features.
I.REVIEW (by teachers and students of familiar materials):

1. How can you differentiate computers of different sizes?

2. What size of computer are you using currently?
J.EVALUATION (in three learning domains…cognitive, affective, and psychomotor)
QUESTIONS:

1.Mention the features of super computers that distinguishes them from mainframe.
2. State features of minicomputers.
3. What is another name for mini computers?
K.CONCLUSION:
Classification of Computer system is required in order to fully appreciate the concept of Computing.
Computer technology has undergone different historical stages and today we have a highly
sophisticated Computer Sys

THIRD TERM WEEK 6

Date: 27/06/2019 -03/06/2019 Subject: ICT

Period: 2
Name:Ebebe Amalachukwu Class: Basic 8 Average age: 12years
Duration of Lesson: 40minutes
Topic: Classification of Computers by versatility
A.BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES (Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor)
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
 Classify computers by degree of versatility
 Give examples of special purpose and general purpose computers

B.INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

Computer system, computer studies text book and projector.

C.PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

Students are familiar with Classification of computers by generation and type.

D.CONTENT:
1. Classification of computers by versatility
- General purpose
- Special purpose
E.INTRODUCTION:

Classification refers to the way objects are grouped or categorized. Classification of Computer
system is required in order to fully appreciate the concept of Computing. Computers are classified in
different ways.

F.PRESENTATION (Step by step exposition of the material)

Step 1: General purpose computers

General purpose computers are designed to perform a wide variety of functions and
operations. These computers can store and execute different programs in its internal storage.
Most computers in use today are General-Purpose computers

3
Note: A general purpose computer is often understood to be a large system, capable of
supporting remote terminal operations, but it may also be a smaller computer, e.g., a desktop
workstation.
Step 2: Special-purpose computers

As the name states, Special-Purpose Computers are designed to be task specific and most of the
times their job is to solve one particular problem. They are also known as dedicated computers,
because they are dedicated to perform a single task over and over again.
Such a computer system would be useful in playing graphic intensive Video Games, traffic lights
control system, navigational system in an aircraft, weather forecasting, satellite launch /
tracking, oil exploration, and in automotive industries, keeping time in a digital watch, or Robot
helicopter.

G.CONTEXTUALIZATION (of the material of the classroom situation):

The teacher uses the computer system and pictures of tools and machines made for each
category of computer to describe the topic.

H.STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT IN THE LESSON

The students are engaged with identifying the different category of computers and their
features.
I.REVIEW (by teachers and students of familiar materials):

1. What makes a special purpose computer different from a general purpose one?
2. Is your computer general or special purpose?
J.EVALUATION (in three learning domains…cognitive, affective, and psychomotor)
QUESTIONS:

1. State 4 examples of special purpose computers

2. What are embedded systems?
K.CONCLUSION:
Classification of Computer system is required in order to fully appreciate the concept of Computing.
Computer technology has undergone different historical stages and today we have a highly
sophisticated Computer System.

Assignment:
1. Compare and contrast between sizes of computers using 3 criteria
