Hacksaw Ridge
Last Kumpisalang Baste, the students are required to watch the film before or
after the main confession. We watched war room and the hacksaw ridge. Hacksaw ridge
does give a lot of lessons in life. It was my first time to watch hacksaw ridge and it was
so fascinating and exciting. The movie, Hacksaw ridge and the life of Doss does give a
lot of lessons in life. According to Pastor Dave Welch, President, Texas Pastor Council,
Hacksaw Ridge is one of the most powerful movies I’ve seen on what it costs to live out
faith with conviction. It challenged me in how I live. To see the story of somebody who
followed his convictions, regardless of the cost, is a message for the church. That kind of
conviction and the fruits of that conviction are what the nation desperately need today.
In the life of Desmond Doss where he experiences the destructive nature of
violence as a child, which become the building blocks to his steadfast belief. He also
joined the military wherein he didn’t follow his girlfriend and especially his father. When
he was in the training, he was really an outperforming above all men. But when it is time
to hold a weapon, he refuses to use nor to hold it. His faith was also tested when he was
in the military because her fellow men do a lot of bad things to him but he never fight
back. Instead, he continues to hold and read the bible that his girlfriend give to him. He
never quit and lose his faith on every battles and hard times he faced.
One of the important lesson of hacksaw Ridge in the life of an individual is that
courage is contagious. Doss’s courage and faith inspired others. Towards the end of the
movie, another scene stood out to me. The company has to return to the top of Hacksaw
Ridge to make the final assault, and Glover tells Doss that the men won’t go up without
him. We then see the moving scene where the whole company paused for Doss to pray
before heading up. They don’t necessarily believe what he believes but because he
believes and they believe in him, his prayer matters.
Another lesson that shown in the movie is be grounded in God’s word. The movie
or Desmond really understand and share the words of God every time he reads the bible.
He loves to quote every verses, every time he comforts, supports and making his fellow
men to be brave and let God do it all for them. Also, another important lesson in this
movie is to cherish God’s word, with intentionality.  After getting injured on the
battlefield, the soldiers took great risk to recover Doss’s Bible that he accidentally left
behind. When Doss was being lowered to safety from Hacksaw Ridge. Even if he was
fighting for his life and in the ending of the story or movie, he was still holding his Bible.
In the story, Hacksaw Ridge and during the time of he was in the training, there is
one captain who really tested his faith. Another lesson from the story is to Find A Way
To Forgive. Intent on wanting to see Doss kicked out of the Army, Captain Glover later
finds it in his heart to swallow his pride and ask for forgiveness after witnessing Doss’s
incredible act of courage.
Have the courage to stand is also important lesson from the movie that I noticed.
Let your faith inspire others. We must somehow find the courage to stand our ground,
stay true to what we believe and never forget that it’s God’s opinion we should value
over the world’s. Doss couldn’t live with himself if he compromised on his beliefs, and
likewise our faith should be so important to us that we too would rather suffer the anger
of the world than give up on what we believe.
The characteristic/s that I wanted to acquired that Desmond have is being
courageous and having a long patient even if you faced many struggles and battles in
your life and being a God centered person. For Doss, Trust God, Even When It Doesn’t
Make Sense. When life throat punches us or when we find ourselves in difficult
situations, let Doss’s unwavering faith be a vivid reminder to us. Not sure you’ve figured
this out yet, but God often allows us to experience the full force of life because He wants
us to learn how to trust in Him completely. He wants us to give Him our worries, our
desires, our sadness, our happiness, our hearts, our entire live, so he can transform it into
something for good.
When Doss was saving men from the Hacksaw Ridge battlefield while praying to
God to “help me get one more” life to save. The phrase, “Please Lord, Help Me Get One
More” really strikes to every person who watched the movie. There are so much turmoil
or problems in our world today, I am reminded that there is a God who pierces through
the darkness of all the dust and fire. There is threshing floor where God meets us, deals
with us and where our prayers can make a difference. According to Tim Young, Doss is a
man, who believed that he was called to lay down his life for his friends and even his
enemies because he was pursuing a higher cause. He was a man showed us that there is a
way through the messiness of life and personalities of people to rise above our
differences for the greater good. He was a man that also served as an example of the
power of one man’s faith in the midst of a world that is turning its back on God.
For me, we may change the world without any material weapons. But we can
chance the world by using the weapons from God which is his words. We may use his
words and also his commandments in order to change the world to be better not to be the
worst. God’s words and have faith in him is the strongest weapon that can help us to
chance the world.
For me, Desmond Doss is a patriotic or a servant in his nation ye he is really a
servant of God. Wherein he was serving the nation while he was using the words of God
to help and to strengthen the positivity of his fellow men. Doss plays as a humble and
charming servant of God who watches as his friends and his brother volunteer to fight the
war overseas. As a religious man, Doss doesn’t believe in taking lives but he believes that
our country is fighting the good fight. He enlists in the army but vows to never hold a
gun.
