COMPLEX ENGINEERING ACTIVITY SOLUTION OF
LINEAR CIRCUIT ANALYSIS (LAB)

INTRODUCTION:

A house consists of different electrical appliances. The details of their connection are given in the table.
We have to made a circuit in Matlab Simulink and will solve different task questions given in the CEA.

TASK 1:
1) Design an electrical circuit in Multism or MATLAB Simulink from the information mentioned
in the table.

Multisim Residential circuit

2) Voltage across each component:

Multisim voltage across each component

3) Current across each component:

Multisim Current across each component

4) Consider that the capacitive load, with an initial stored energy of 0.50 J, is discharged through a
3Ω resistor. What is the initial charge on the capacitor? Also calculate the potential difference
across the capacitive load.
Given:

E= 0.50 J

V= 24 V

Calculation:

We know, Energy=1/2QV

0.5=1/2*Q*24V

Q=41.66 milli Farad

5) Power rating and Power Loss:

Multisim Power across each component

TASK 2:
1) Explain the working of this circuit.
The common household circuits used in electrical wiring installation are in parallel. Mostly, switches,
Outlet and light points etc. are connected in parallel to maintain the power supply to other electrical
devices and appliances through hot and neutral wire. So the components of this circuit are connected in
parallel. There are two advantages of connecting parallel. First one is to maintain the value of voltage
across each element in connection. The second advantage is that if any elements burn out then flow of
current will stop because it will have an alternate path to flow.

2) On the basis of the results obtained from task 1, which electrical appliance will consume high
electrical power? Mention the reason. Moreover, what strategies could be adopted to reduce
power consumption in various electrical equipment?
The LED bulb consumes most energy due to low resistance and high flow of current. We know
P = I2/R we see that resistance is inversely proportional to power, so using high resistance components
can reduce power consumption.

3) What will happen if LED bulb burns out? Will it have an effect on the electrical circuit?
Justify your answer.
If LED burns, then supply of current will cut from that branch but remaining elements will continue
working because it is connected in parallel with main supply. So it will not affect the supply of voltage
to remaining circuit. But power consumption will reduce due to decrease in number of elements in
connections.

4) What will happen if the DC Fan is replaced with a similar fan but of higher resistance value?
Will it have an effect on the electrical circuit? State the reason.
When the resistance increases the current decreases which in turn decreases the power consumption. So
when DC fan is replaced with the fan of higher resistance , it will reduce the power consumption.
5) What will happen if the capacitive load is replaced with an inductive load of similar rating?
How would it affect the circuit? Explain briefly.
Voltage source is DC here. We know the inductor is short to DC. An Inductor is equivalent to
a Short Circuit to Direct Current, because once the Storage Phase has finished, the Current, iL, that
flows through it is stable, iL = V / R, no Self Induced e.m.f. is produced and vL is zero. The
Inductor acts like an ordinary connecting wire, its Resistance is zero. So When capacitor is replaced with
inductor then all current will flow only through the inductor .No current will flow from any other
element.

6) Which circuit analysis technique would be best to compute various electrical parameters in the
above mentioned circuit? Justify your answer.
The KCL is the best technique to find electrical parameters like current, voltage, power etc. in parallel
circuit. KCL is also known as Kirchhoff's first law or junction rule. The principle of this law is to
conserve the electric charge. The law states that the amount of current flowing into a node is equal to the
sum of currents flowing out of it. For performing the nodal analysis in Ohm's law, KCL is used.
