Radiographs of 6.4 mm ) aluminum casting showing
Porosity indications of gas voids (a) and elongated gas porosity (b).
HER
Description: Found mostly in steel and other ERD
metals poured into ingot molds.
Location in Part; At the surface of a casting or
throughout the cross section.
Characteristics/Appearance: Gas porosity
takes the form of more or less spherical voids
or bubbles that form within the cast metal.
Metallurgical Analysis: Porosity is usually due
to occluded gas that forms in the molten metal
before it is poured into an ingot mold. The gas
has no opportunity to rise and escape through
the casting top or risers, thus becoming
entrapped during solidification. Gas porosity
generally results from atmospheric interactions
between the mold and metal. Overheating of
the melt and excessive moisture in the mold
are contributing factors.
