Political Science majors needs to learn IHL and pursue Peace Studies its

because as a student who studies politics, government systems, international


policy and law they are expected to be knowledgeable enough on how to
utilized the principles oh IHL, the mechanism of IHL, how to regulate the
conduct of war(jus in bello) and how to convict war criminals by utilizing the
concepts of IHL. There are a lot of reasons why a Political Science Major
need to learn and inculcate the principles of IHL. Here are the following
reasons why Political Science Majors needs to learn the IHL:

1. Because all PolSci majors need to know basic tenets of IHL

- International Law in general and IHL in particular should be taught and learn
by PolSci majors not only because they promote training and enhancement in
legal thinking and to grasp legal mechanisms of IHL. They also deserved and
need to studied because of their content. IHL enables PolSci majors to
understand the world and particularly news around the world which is marked
by armed conflicts. Even if their country are not affected by armed conflict as
a citizens and human beings PolSci majors need to understand how IHL deals
with such situations. For example there are assylum seekers who came from
conflicted areas, as a PolSci major who have broad understanding of IHL you
can able to protect the rights and the life of those person who is affected by
armed conflict.

2. To stimulate Legal thinking

- A PolSci major who will become future lawyers, prosecutors and judges
must be able to understand and always be flexible and updated in the legal
mechanism and jurisprudence of IHL. The purpose of this is not just to
memorize the constantly changing solutions of legislation that can be found in
books. The purpose is in order for the PolSci majors to acquire a specific
method of reasoning in order to learn, to choose and to construct arguments
appropriately.

3. Because Polsci Majors will need IHL in their future jobs.

- At the time of their schooling, PolSci majors maybe not yet staked out a
career path. For some IHL will be part of their professional training. For
instance, maybe some of the PolSci majors will become future armed forces
or military officer, they will have to learn how to conduct hostilities, treat
civilians and how to run and administer a POW camp in conformity of IHL. For
PolSci majors, IHL will be an essential tool for accomplishing their mission of
protecting the efficiency and image of their armed forces in their own country.

- In addition, as future diplomats or defense ministers, PolSci majors will have


to understand the mechanisms for the implementation of IHL and the
consequences of the distinction between “jus ad bellum” and “jus in bello” if
they want to achieve their government on how to react to violations, how to
fight terrorism, how to implement a development aid policy, or how to plead
before the International Court of Justice. Finally, PolSci majors who will
someday become attorneys, prosecutors, and judges need a thorough
understanding of IHL when defending, prosecuting, or judging alleged war
criminals.
