Lesson 1 Act. 1

1. What is History? How is it different from Historiography?

History is a large body of knowledge that examines the lives of individuals, communities, and
countries in the past, as well as their achievements and failures. Thus, the substance of historians'
work is history. A history is a narrative that analyzes and explains past events, based on records from
the relevant era or later, or based on the recollections of persons who were still alive at the time they
were questioned to preserve their recollections (“oral history”). It is the work product of historians,
the “what” of history. On the other hand, historians utilize historiography as a technique of doing
their work (Observatory, 2021). It teaches the proper techniques to collect, sort, evaluate, compare,
comprehend, and write about historical materials in a step-by-step, rational, and evidence-based
empirical procedure that is similar to "the scientific method." Therefore, it is the “how” of history
writing. For example, the story of what happened at the Battle of Mactan has been told in many of
ways. Each historian has looked at the evidence and formed their own conclusions about what
happened. Historiography would analyze why the views of those historians have changed. Therefore,
history is a record of the past whereas, historiography is study of how history is analyzed, written
and presented.

2. How does Filipino historians conceptualized history? How does their works contribute to the
study of Philippine historiography?

The Filipino Historians use studies, sources, critical methods and interpretations to study the
history of the Philippines.  Before the arrival of the Spanish empire in the 16th century, the
Philippine archipelago had been a part of several empires. The Abugida writing system was widely
employed in writing and sealing on documents in pre-colonial Philippines, albeit it was only for
communication and there are no known texts of early literature or history (Rodriguez, 2013)
On the proceeding generation, Filipino historians established National Historical Commission
of the Philippines which is a Philippine government agency whose mission is "to promote Philippine
history and cultural heritage through research, dissemination, conservation, site management, and
heraldry works, with the goal of instilling awareness and appreciation of our heroes and other
illustrious Filipinos, and to instill pride in our people." In addition, they arrange conferences and
other academic events by initiating, facilitating, and organizing them. They also inform the national
and worldwide communities about scholarly and research opportunities, as well as the publication of
journals, books, and newsletters, in order to raise knowledge of Philippine culture, history, and
religion. People's hearts and minds are naturally drawn to history since it mirrors their own identity,
experiences, and aspirations. It's an interpretive recreation of the community's past, embracing
political, social, economic, and cultural life.
