BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Basketball is one of the world's most popular sports that necessitate fitness skills

that performed under dynamic settings. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 caused a

substantial disruption prompting numerous countries and territories to consider

implementing global lockdown. The sporting events have been temporarily suspended, and

the World Health Organization (WHO) mandated physical separation, self-isolation, and the

closure of all sporting facilities (Schmidt, T., & Pawlowski, 2021). As a result, basketball

athletes' usual training routines and daily habits in the training sports facilities and fitness

centers' access to strength and conditioning were also temporarily halted.

Recent studies related to the fitness performance of basketball players concluded

that they experience severe disturbance as a result of the imposed lockdown (Santos &

Janeira, 2009). The reduced training and detraining of basketball players will lead to low

game performance, game-induced fatigue, prolonged recovery periods after training/games,

and increased game-related injury risk (Bourdas, 2021). Furthermore, Paoli & Musumeci

(2020) also stated that long detraining tends to lessen the maximal oxygen consumption

(VO2max), a loss of recently gained endurance improvements, and, most critically, a loss of

muscular strength and bulk.

In addressing the problem of this study, Castrogiovanni (2019) show that physical

activity is an effective way to maintain the fitness performance of an athlete and preserve

function, reduce pain and fatigue, improve muscle strength and joint flexibility. It is essential

to maintain the fitness performance of basketball players because the study of Helming

(2019) stated that strength training has attached to a regular training program and it was
proven to be beneficial in competitive sports since it allows players to perform at a greater

level while preventing injuries. Peterson (2018) also shows that in basketball, power is

significant because it is a reflection of the body's energy production, which is used to

generate some form of output, such as a pedal revolution or even a vertical jump. The

National Academy of Sports Medicine (2019) also stated that basketball players must

maintain their speed and agility training to improve footwork abilities and cardio-respiratory

endurance.

There are no related studies in the locality about the pandemic covid-19 lockdown:

fitness performance in basketball. It provides the researcher with the confidence and

fortitude to do research in order to address the scarcity of the study on the subject and

provide knowledge on the basketball players and other sectors. Furthermore, the

researcher is interested in investigating the effect of the pandemic covid-19 lockdown on

basketball players' fitness performance (strength, power, speed and agility), notably those

from Manay, Davao Oriental basketball athletes.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The following are the objectives of this research:

1. What is the profile of basketball player in terms of:

1.1 Gender

1.2 Age

2. To assess the fitness performance of basketball players through:

2.1 Ball handling

2.2 Passing

2.3 Movement
2.4 Game awareness

2.5 Shooting

2.6 Rebounding

3. What is the physical activity of the basketball players during the pandemic covid-19

lockdown?

4. What is the effect of pandemic covid-19 lockdown in the fitness performance of

basketball players?

HYPOTHESIS

The pandemic covid-19 lockdown has no harmful effect on the fitness performance

of basketball players.

THEORETHICAL FRAMEWORK
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT

 Profile of basketball player  Data Collection  Identified effect of

according to its:  Questionnaire-based pandemic covid-19
 Gender survey lockdown in the fitness
 Age  Statistical Data performance of basketball
player.
 Assessing the fitness  Proposed physical activity
performance of basketball that can be beneficial to
players through: the basketball players to
 Ball handling maintain a good fitness
 Passing performance during
 Movement pandemic covid-19
 Game awareness lockdown.
 Shooting 
 Rebounding

 Physical activity of
basketball players during
pandemic covid-19
lockdown.

 Effect of pandemic covid-

19 lockdown in the fitness
performance of basketball
player.
Figure 1 shows the conceptual framework of the study. The variables that were

explored are included in the input frame: profile of basketball player respondents; assessing

the fitness performance of basketball players through ball handling, passing, movement,

game awareness, shooting, and rebounding; physical activity of basketball players during

pandemic covid-19 lockdown; and the effect of pandemic covid-19 lockdown in the fitness

performance of basketball player. The process frame deals with the data collection,

questionnaire-based survey, and statistical data. The output frame depicts the study's

expected output or outcome: identified effect of pandemic covid-19 lockdown in the fitness

performance of basketball player; proposed physical activity that can be beneficial to the

basketball players to maintain a good fitness performance during pandemic covid-19

lockdown.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study was significant in determining the fitness performance in basketball

during the pandemic covid-19 lockdown.

Specifically, the findings may benefit the following:

Basketball Players. The result of this study will be beneficial to the basketball players

because it will encourage and inspires them to train more for the betterment of their fitness

performance despite pandemic covid-19 lockdown.

Coaches. The result of the study would give knowledge to the basketball coaches to monitor

the fitness performance of their athletes during the pandemic covid-19 lockdown.

Students. The findings of this study will inform students, particularly those who participate

in basketball, on the fitness performance of basketball players during the lockdown.

Institutions. This study would benefit the institution since it acts as a reference and makes a

substantial contribution to the field of knowledge.

Researchers. This study serves as the basis for doing related studies for future researchers.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following concepts are described to gain a better grasp of the terminologist employed in

the study:

 Fitness Performance- ability to accomplish daily activities with maximum efficiency,

endurance, and strength while managing disease, weariness, and stress, as well as

reducing sedentary behavior

 Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)- is a respiratory virus that is very infectious. Fever,

cough, headache, exhaustion, breathing difficulty, and loss of smell and taste are all

common COVID-19 symptoms. The virus can be captured when the person is

exposed to virus-containing respiratory droplets and airborne particles breathed by

an infected individual. This disease has spread worldwide, leading to an ongoing

pandemic.

 Lockdown- a policy requiring people or communities to remain in their current

location due to specific risks. Lockdowns that affect an area rather than specific sites

are commonly referred to as "stay-at-home" or "shelter-in-place."

 Pandemic- it is an outbreak of disease that affects multiple countries. It has a larger

impact and kills more people than an epidemic.
