Statement of Intent:

Product 1:
I intend to title my true-life magazine “Spill The Beans!”, which will be aimed at 16-25 year olds who
are not only eager to have some escapism from their own life but also, to be entertained which
reflects Uses & Gratifications theory. One representation I intend to create is sexuality through
media language features such as lexis, through the cover line of my first front cover being titled
“Lesbian lovers at WAR” (war being coloured in red to connote violence). I also aim to create gender
representations, by using a photograph of a woman against a blue background (in my second front
cover) which would also show a progressive agenda of my magazine as it contrasts gender
stereotypes therefore, this would reflect Hall’s Representation theory as I am challenging anti-
stereotypes. Furthermore, both front cover photographs will be shot from an eye level angle and the
mise-en-scene will be a plain colour (one yellow, one blue) to emphasise the professionalism across
both magazines and make my magazine seem welcoming due to the fact my model will be smiling.
Furthermore, the lexis used in the cover lines would be direct and informal, to create synthetic
personalisation with the C1-E target audience. Moreover, to reflect media industries I will be abiding
to the IPSO guidelines, as I intend to include a story discussing sexual assault therefore, I must keep
the victim anonymous. This reflects Livingstone and Lunt’s regulation theory as it could be argued
that this story would cause conflict between the needs of a citizen and a consumer, as the citizen
wants to know more about the victim whereas the consumer must protect the victim.

Product 2:
On my website, I intend for the layout to similarly reflect my print magazine by the navigation bar
including tabs that demonstrate the different themes covered in my contents page such as “Your
Lives”, “Your Looks” and “Your Chance” which represents a clear brand identity. Also, I want my
website to include interactive elements such as an opportunity for the demographic to send their
stories: “Send us your story”. This reflects Shirky’s end-of-audience theory as the audience are able
to become ‘prosumers’ as not only are they producing the content for my magazine, they are also
consuming the content. To further promote a strong brand identity, the lexis will remain direct and
informal as it attracts the 16-25 year old C1-E target audience effectively, the colour palette will
remain the same (orange, white and black), the typography will continue to be sans-serif as I aim to
demonstrate an informal approach towards my audience and I also have an opportunity to write an
article page, which will further highlight representations of gender. Furthermore, my website will
include the IPSO logo so my audience feel reassured that they are being provided with accurate
information

Convergence:
One way I will demonstrate convergence in my production is including a “Call to Action” by including
the website link on my contents page and front cover, as this encourages the audience to visit the
website for exclusive content such as interviews which provides audio-visual content that is not
possible in the print edition. I also intend to promote other Bauer products such as other magazines
and their radio stations to demonstrate that my magazine is amongst the conglomerate and that it
should be just as valued as other Bauer products. Lastly, I intend to include the IPSO logo to reassure
my audience that this magazine will cater all their needs without fault.
