Maternal and Child Care

Age of Gestation- common term used during


pregnancy to describe how far along the
pregnancy is. It is measured in week, from the
first day the woman’s last menstrual cycle to
the current date. Normal pregnancy can range
from 38 to 42 weeks. Infants born before 37
weeks are considered premature (baby is born
too early).

Cotyledons Placenta- dull greyish red in color


and is divided into 15-20 cotyledons. The fetal
side of placenta

Caruncle- the maternal side of placenta

Placentome: a cotyledon and caruncle together

Uterine contractions- tightening of the muscles


of uterus.

Calkin sign- the change of shape of the uterus


from discoid to ovoid, indicating placental
separation from the uterine wall.

Fundus of the uterus is the top portion,


opposite from the cervix.

of the uterus

Fundus- part of hollow organ that is farthest


away from the organ’s opening.

Brandt-Andrews Maneuver- is a technique of


delivery of the placenta. By grasping the
umbilical cord with one hand and placing the
other hand on the abdomen

Crede’s Maneuver- technique used to void


urine from the bladder of the patient who have
SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) or due to certain disease
which made him/her cannot void without aid.
Best performed by using both hands, leaning
forward, and pressing down firmly on the lower
abdomen between the belly button and the
pubic bone.
