MC1-A: REVIEW OF COMMON LABORATORY TECHNIQUES

I. OBJECTIVES:
• This activity will enable students to:
o recall common laboratory techniques and be aware of their uses
o familiar with the laboratory apparatus and their uses

II. APPARATUS AND MATERIALS: Pen, pencil, and laboratory materials

III. PROCEDURE: Draw the different set-ups of the common laboratory techniques, label
completely the parts, and give the purpose of each technique. Diagrams must be
placed in the boxes:

1. Filtration 7. Bending of glass tubing

2. Evaporation 8. Heating a test tube containing a volatile fluid

3. Centrifugation 9. Weighing a solid chemical

4. Extraction 10. Reading a graduated cylinder with 5 mL of water

(meniscus level)
5. Decantation 11. Determining the pH of a solution

6. Magnetism 12. Weighing a liquid chemical

IV. DRAWING. Draw the technique on the first column, then write the
description/significance on the second table.
