Loading of a Bulk Carrier: Part Three

This coursework takes you through the calculation procedure for determining the global loads on a bulk carrier and the
scantlings of a midship section. Part Three requires you to calculate suitable scantlings for the vessel given the idealised
midship section given later in this hand-out. You should assume that the longitudinal stiffening, where shown, effectively
increases the plate thickness by 40% without appreciably shifting its centroid of area.

Tasks
You must complete the following tasks in Part Three of the coursework:

1. Using the maximum still water bending moment from part 2, calculate the corresponding value of “t”.
The bending stress is not to exceed 160.8MN/m2.
2. Using the IACS Unified Rules for Bulk Carriers (www.iacs.org.uk), find the value of “t” for the hogging and sagging
conditions. This should cover the Still Water, Wave, and Design conditions.
3. If the ship heels to 30o from the vertical, find the maximum bending stress.
4. Using the Von Mises Yield Criteria, identify the maximum permissible shear stress.
5. For the value of “t” identified in question 1 and the maximum value of shear stress for your vessel, calculate the
corresponding maximum shear stress.
6. Using the values of “t” derived from the IACS rules and the maximum value of shear stress for your vessel; find
the corresponding maximum shear stresses.
7. Show if the Von Mises Yield Criterion is met in each case and show which value of “t” you consider to be
appropriate. Explain why?

Submission Instructions

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR COURSEWORK

Submission requirements by the published deadline (per group of two people):

 NESS cover sheets for both group members
 One printed out copy of the results sheet (available on Blackboard) with your answers filled in
 Supporting calculations on TWO sheets of A4 paper with (handwritten or typed). You may write on both sides of
the paper.
A marks penalty will be applied if these instructions are not followed correctly.

For the supporting calculations, a marks penalty will be applied if more than two sheets of A4 are submitted, if
calculations are unclear and/or if there are mistakes in the calculations. No marks will be awarded if supporting
calculations are not submitted.

If your results are incorrect you should pick up your supporting calculations from the school office for further guidance
and feedback.

Mark Scheme

Coursework is marked out of 50 and forms 50% of the overall coursework mark. Marks will be awarded as follows:
 Correct answers on result sheet 30
 Explanation of choice of “t” 6
 Clarity of supporting calculations 6
 Validity of supporting calculations 6
 Meeting instructions 2
