DESCRIPTION (CONT.)
This SFN applies to all post-November 1997 International® Engine Control Modules except 3–box.

The Engine Reprogramming Harness allows the technician to power the engine ECM and IDM without
using the ignition key. Not using the ignition key cycle eliminates the need to disconnect the ABS module,
transmission module, or any aftermarket module attached to the J1708 bus. The Reprogramming Harness has
an LED voltmeter readout. If voltage is below 12.5 or above 14 volts, the tool will indicate the battery voltage is
“HI/LO” with a red LED (THE TECHNICIAN NEEDS TO RESOLVE THIS CONDITION). If the battery voltage is
between 12.5 and 14 volts, the tool will indicate that the battery voltage is “OK” with a green LED.

Figure 1

PROCEDURE
1. Set the switch to the OFF position (if it is connected while in the ON position the 10 amp fuse may blow).

2. Connect the Reprogramming Harness to a clean power, a clean ground, and the designated ECM power
fuse location (see illustrations).

3. Check the LED indicators while the switch is in the OFF position. The Green LED should be illuminated
before the programming process is started.

4. When the programming software prompts you to cycle the key, cycle the switch on the Reprogramming
Harness instead.

NOTE – After programming has begun, the red LED may come on. This is normal. The power draw
from the ECM/IDM or CEC modules may bring the voltage below 12.5 volts when the switch is ON;
programming will not be negatively affected.

International Engine
Reprogramming Harness

The Engine Reprogramming Harness (Part Number 406010) enables you to power on
the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the Injector Drive Module (IDM) without using the
vehicle’s ignition key. This eliminates the need to disconnect the ABS, Transmission, or
any aftermarket module attached to the J1708 bus.
The Engine Reprogramming Harness has an LED voltmeter readout. If the voltage is
below 12.5 volts or above 14 volts, the red LED is illuminated. This indicates that the
battery voltage is “HI/LO.”

WARNING:
ä You must resolve this condition.

If the battery voltage is between 12.5 and 14 volts, the green LED is illuminated. This
indicates that the battery voltage is “OK.”

NOTE:
i For more detail see SFN-07-29.

Connecting the Harness to a Vehicle

z To connect the Engine Reprogramming Harness to a vehicle:
1. Set the ON/OFF switch on the harness to the OFF position.

CAUTION:
ä If the harness is connected while in the ON position, the 10 amp fuse may blow.

2. Connect the harness to a clean power and ground source, and to the designated
ECM power fuse location (see Fig.1 and Fig. 2).
3. Check the LED indicators while the ON/OFF switch is in the OFF position. The Green
LED should be illuminated before the programming process is started.
4. When the programming software prompts you to cycle the key, cycle the ON/OFF
switch on the Reprogramming Harness instead.

NOTE:
i After programming has begun, the red LED may come on. This is normal. The power draw
from the ECM/IDM or CEC modules may bring the voltage below 12.5 volts when the ON/
OFF switch is ON. Programming will not be negatively affected.
