Virtual Interview Do’s and Don’ts

DON’T

1. Do not tell your life story.

Often the very first question in interviews is “tell me a little bit about yourself”. This is the
opportunity to brag about your accomplishments and key strengths that would be beneficial for the
job that you are applying for. Always keep it positive, do not discuss family and financial
problems. Remember that this is a professional encounter, not a casual chat session.

2. Do not arrive to the interview late.

While this may be a virtual interview, it is still proper to arrive and prepare for the interview 15-30
minutes early. During this time, you can communicate with IU leadership on the details of the
interview and ask any last-minute questions as well as review the employer’s website.

3. Do not come unprepared.

Have your resume and any other documents related to this position open on your computer and
ready to go. IU will provide you with the company’s website for review the day of the interview.
DON’T assume that you can “wing it” and be impressive without trying, or without advanced
preparation

4. Test your electronics.

Make sure that your headphones, microphone, and computer are in working order in an effort to
minimize technical delays. Occasionally technical difficulties may occur regardless, please make
every effort to correct any issues ahead of time. Communicate with IU staff BEFORE the
interview, should there be any issues.

5. Minimize distractions.
Close any websites, chats, TV, music, and cell phones.

DO:

1. Visualize a positive and successful interview

2. Sit up straight and smile.

When you are being interviewed via telephone, it is even more important than usual to infuse your
voice with interest and enthusiasm. Remember that the recruiter can’t see whether you are smiling
or frowning, so do your best to put a “smile” in your voice.

3. DO speak clearly and slowly.
Many people subconsciously talk more quickly when they are on the phone. To avoid sounding
like a runaway train, make a conscious effort to speak more slowly and clearly without losing your
enthusiastic tone.

4. Always have 2-3 questions prepared for when the employers ask “do you have any questions
for me” towards the end of the interview. If you don’t prepare smart questions, you run the
risk of the interviewer assuming you aren’t interested or haven’t prepared.

Sample Questions:
What are the three major tasks I will be handling?
What do you think are the most important qualities for someone to excel in this role?
