II Internal Assessment Test

DESIGN OF RC STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS (18CV53)
V Sem. Dept. : Civil Engineering Time: 1 hour Max. marks: 30
Instructions:
1. Answer all the questions legibly in A4 size sheets only; scan the written scripts and save in PDF
format by giving file name as below
‘USN_Second IA_18CV53.pdf’
2. Write your USN, Name, Subject Code, Subject Title and append your signature on the top of
the answer script. Mention page number at the bottom of every page without fail.
3. Submit the answer sheet to respective faculty while reporting to the college.
4. Email the scanned PDF file to vinaymr5@sdmit.in (9611895144) within 15 minutes after
completion of the test.
Answer ONE full question from PART A and ONE full question from PART B

Q. No. PART A Marks

1 (a) What do you mean by doubly reinforced beam and list the factors/situations to be [5]
considered for the adoption a doubly reinforced beam?
(b) A RCC beam of rectangular section 300mm wide and overall depth 850mm is [10]
reinforced with 4 bars of 25mm dia on the tension side, effective cover 50mm. Find
the ultimate moment of resistance of the section, use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel.
Find the additional reinforcement required to make this a balanced section.
OR
2 (a) Why do you design the shear reinforcement for a RCC beam? Why do you bent up [5]

the main bars at 45o near the support?

(b) A doubly reinforced beam section is 250mm wide and 450mm deep to the centre of [10]
the tensile reinforcement. It is reinforced with #2 -16mm dia as compression
reinforcement at an effective cover of 50mm and #4 - 25mm dia as tensile steel,
using M15 concrete and Fe250 steel. Calculate the ultimate moment of resistance of
the beam section
PART B
3 (a) A simply supported rectangular RC beam having clear span of 5.93 m is resting on [15]
300 mm wide supports, at ends. Take width of beam = 300 mm, super imposed load
of 12 kN/m. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. Design the beam and check it for
deflection control. Show the reinforcement details.
OR
4 (a) Design a cantilever beam having an effective span of 3m. the beam is carrying a [15]
load of 10kN/m, Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel
