Dear Sir,
Advanced Laboratory Center (ALC) is pleased to submit this report of our geotechnical soil
investigation performed for the above-mentioned project at Dubai- UAE.
This Investigation was carried out as per our proposal ALC/GQ/ 01-19/0115-Rev 01 dated
22/01/2019 with approval on Purchase Order Number 98 dated 22/01/2019. The objective of
investigation was to determine the sub-surface condition at the proposed site and to provide
the necessary geotechnical information to aid the geotechnical engineer in designing
suitable foundation.
We are pleased to have been of service on this project and look forward to further co-
operation on future projects. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information and
clarifications.
Yours Faithfully

2.0 PROJECT AND SITE DESCRIPTION
The proposed project is “DS-188 Jabel Ali Industrial Sewerage and Drainage System,
Jabal Ali, Dubai, U.A.E” At the time of investigation, the site was vacant and slightly uneven,
site levels are related to Existing Ground Level. Appendix A shows copy of the site plan with
borehole locations.
Standard Penetration Test (SPT) were conducted at regular intervals (0.50m interval up to the
depth of 3.0m and thereafter every 1.00m interval up to required investigation depth) within
the soil layers, in order to estimate the relative densities and obtain samples for classification
purposes. The tests were performed in accordance with BS 1377: Part 9 AMD8264-95-
Determination of Penetration Resistance Using Split Barrel Sampler (SPT).
5
RGT19-006/38: DS188 Jabel Ali Industrial Sewerage and Drainage System, Jabel Ali, Dubai-UAE.
The SPT consists of driving a standard 50mm outer diameter split spoon sampler into the
bottom of the borehole with successive blows of a 63.5kg hammer falling freely through
760mm.The SPT N value is the number of blows required to achieve a penetration of 300mm,
after an initial seating drive of 150mm.Disturbed SPT and bulk samples collected during
drilling were retained in sealed, labeled plastic bags.
The undisturbed rock core samples were obtained using a double tube core barrel having
79mm internal diameter. The core samples obtained from the double tube core barrel were
measured for their TCR (Total Core Recovery), SCR (Solid Core Recovery) and RQD (Rock
Quality Designation). The recovered samples were examined, described and classified by our
Geotechnical engineer / Geologist. They were then placed in moisture proof polythene wraps
in proper sequence in wooden core boxes and transported to laboratory for testing.
Whenever, TCR is less than 40%, standard penetration tests (SPT) were conducted to confirm
the relative density of the strata at the subsequent depth.
Careful attention has to be taken during drilling for the existence of groundwater. It has to
be noticed that the groundwater level is affected by seasonal and tidal changes as well as
dewatering in the adjacent areas. Generally, the water table stabilize in the boreholes about
24 to 48 hours after completion of boring, therefore the water table was measured and
recorded after such period related to site conditions. Individual Borehole Logs are presented
in Appendix B.

4.0 LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory test were conducted on selected soil and rock sample recovered from the
borehole in addition to ground water samples to aid in classification of the subsurface
materials. Tests were conducted in general accordance with relevant British Standards and
American Society for Testing and Materials as follows.

6.2 Slope Stability
Cutting the slope of the excavation back to its prescribed angle will allow the forces of
cohesion and internal friction to hold the soil together and prevent it from flowing down the
face of the trench. The soil face type primarily determines the excavation angle.
A Slope is safe when material is stable, i.e. the slope does not flatten when left for a
considerable period of time and that, there is no movement of material down the slope and
the toe of the slope remains in the same place. The following slope angle may be
considered, based on the soil type encountered on sit

Notes:
*Slopes greater than 6.0m in depth require a bench or sloping based on the requirement of the
OSHA 1926 subpart P Appendix B.

safer slope is required and which include but not limited to:

RGT19-006/38: DS188 Jabel Ali Industrial Sewerage and Drainage System, Jabel Ali, Dubai-UAE.
6.3 Drainage
It is recommended that proper and efficient surface drainage be provided within the site
area both during and after construction. Surface water should be directed away from the
edge of the construction.

7.2 Results and Recommendation
Chemical tests were performed on selected soil and ground water samples collected from
the boreholes. The results of the chemical analysis for soil and ground water are given in
Appendix C.
The methodology of assessment of ground for chemical agents aggressive for concrete has
been based on the latest publications concerning assessment of exposure conditions and
specification of concrete to resist chemical attack:
- BS 8500-1:2006
- BRE Digest 1, 2005, Concrete in Aggressive Ground
- CIRIA Publication C577, 2002, Guide to the construction of reinforced concrete in the
Arabian Peninsula.
Appendix D presents brief discussion on the chemical attack on buried concrete along with
extracts of references for assessment of exposure conditions and concrete specification.

The above classification does not reflect the significance of chloride ions in concrete
surrounding. In such cases the test exposure conditions should be studied in conjunction
with modified recommendations of concrete mix design, based on local experience in the
gulf region, CIRIA Publication C577, 2002, Guide to the construction of reinforced concrete in
the Arabian Peninsula.
In accordance to BRE Special Digest 1, 2005 and considering the existing site conditions and
the local experience in the Gulf Region, the following preliminary design chemical
classification of concrete may be proposed, subject to the following provisions: cast in-situ

IMPORTANT NOTES
The recommendations and discussions presented in this report are based on the subsurface
conditions encountered at the specific locations and times where sampling was conducted.
There may be, however, conditions pertaining to the site which have not been into account
due to the limited number of boreholes.
Comments made relating to groundwater is based upon observations made at the time of
investigation. Groundwater conditions may vary with time from those reported due to factors
such as seasonal effects, atmospheric effects / tidal conditions as well as dewatering in
adjacent areas.
The recommendations and discussions presented in this report considered preliminary and
presented for guidance purpose only.
