Second Commandment

YOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD YOUR GOD IN VAIN.
Commands
To respect the Holy Name of God: We must treasure the Holy Name of God with love and
respect. We can use the Name of God only to bless, praise, and glorify him.
To Proclaim God’s Name: God wants us to be missionaries and to proclaim his Holy Name to
all peoples.
To Keep Oaths and Vows: The oaths and vows we make in the name of God oblige under pain
of mortal sin. Particularly important are the marriage, priestly, and religious vows.
Forbids
Blasphemy: It is a serious sin to utter words of hatred against God and the Saints.
Perjury: To lie under oath or to make false swearing are mortal sins and must be avoided by all
means.
Third Commandment
REMEMBER TO KEEP HOLY THE LORD’S DAY
Commands
To participate in the Holy Mass: We must attend the Mass on Sundays and Holidays of
obligation. Those who cannot attend because of sickness, old age, or a very serious reason,
should at least listen to the Mass through any mass media.
Holidays of obligation:
1.) Mary, Mother of God Jan. 1
2.) Epiphany Jan. 6
3.) St. Joseph March 19
4.) Ascension 40 days after Easter
5.) Corpus Domini 2nd Sunday after Pentecost
6.) Sts. Peter and Paul June 29
7.) Assumption Aug. 15
8.) All Saints Nov. 1
9.) Immaculate Conception Dec. 8
10.) Christmas Dec. 25

1
To Rest and Spend Quality Time with the Family: Sunday is a day of rest and recreation,
including sports, to be spent with family members and friends.
Forbids
Unnecessary Servile Work: We must avoid all the works which prevent us from sanctifying the
Lord’s day.
Godless Hedonism: It is wrong to spend the Lod’s day concerned only with physical pleasure,
taking no care for the soul.
Fourth Commandment
HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER
Commands
To Honor Our Parents: We must love, respect, and obey our parents, because they gave us life.
To Respect Civil and Religious Authorities: Jesus commanded us to respect the civil servants,
such as the president, the police, and the teachers; and the religious leaders, such as the bishops,
the priests and the sisters: because every authority comes from God.
Forbids
Disobedience: It is a sin to dishonor or to disobey our parents.
Rebellion: It is not only a sin, but also a crime, to rebel against the legitimate civil leaders and
authorities.
Finally, we are not only allowed but also obliged to disobey our parents, teachers, civil and
religious authorities when they order to do something against the will of God.
Fifth Commandment
YOU SHALL NOT KILL
Commands
To Safeguard Life: All forms of life, including our own existence, come from God. We are not
the owners of our life, but only the administrators.
To Respect Our Neighbor: Insulting or disrespecting our neighbor is tantamount to killing
him/her in our heart.
Forbids
Murder: To kill an innocent person is one of the greatest sins and, if unrepented, it deserves
eternal damnation.
Suicide: No one has the right to kill himself/herself, because we are not the owners of our life,
but only the custodians.

2
Abortions: Since we believe that life begins at conception, which is nine months before birth,
any form of abortion is murder.
Euthanasia: It is a sin to terminate the life of those who are old, sick, or abnormal. In case of
incurable sickness, we may stop the extraordinary means, but we have to continue with the
ordinary ones.
Substance Abuse: We must avoid everything which is harmful to our health and to the health of
our neighbor, such as the abuse of alcohol and tobacco.
Environmental Destruction: It is a grave sin to destroy the environment and to pollute the
worlds for the sake of profit.
Sixth Commandment
YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY
Commands
Chastity: To be chaste means to use our sexuality according to the will of God. Those who are
married must love their spouse, be faithful, and have children. Those who are not married must
abstain from any sexual activity. Chastity is possible with the help of prayer, self-control, and
avoidance of the occasions of sin.
Forbids
Fornication: It is the sexual union between a man and woman outside the sacrament of
Marriage. Those who practice pre-marital sex, who live-in, or who have only civil marriage, are
also guilty of fornication. Before having intercourse, the faithful must be married.
Homosexuality: Whoever has a sexual relation with a person of the same sex is committing a
very serious sin.
Masturbation: It is a sin because it is against the proper use of sexuality, which implies love for
the spouse and opening to the gift of life.
Pornography: To sell, buy, or use pornographic material is a sin, because it reduces the human
body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit, to a depraved means of arousal and pleasure.
Child Abuse: To have sexual relations with minor is a hatful sin.
Prostitution: To buy and sell the human body for the sake of profit and pleasure is a scandalous
sin.
Artificial Birth Control: Married couples who use contraceptives commit sin because they
deprive the family, the Church, and the society, of the gift of children. Every marital act must
express love and be open to life.

Seventh Commandment
YOU SHALL NOT STEAL
Commands
To Respect Our Neighbor’s Property: We must not steal, abuse, or destroy the property of
others.
To Share with the Needy: Although we have the right to private property, we are bound to
share our blessings with the poor and the needy.
To Return Stolen Property: A requirement for the forgiveness of sins is the restitution of stolen
property to the legitimate owner. In the impossibility of going so, the corresponding stolen
amount should be donated to the poor or to the church.
To work: Every man must work to support himself/herself and his/her family, and to sustain the
society.
Forbids
Stealing: To take the property of others without right or permission is a serious sin. Stealing may
take different forms, such as: cheating in business, refusal to pay the just wages, not paying
taxes, delaying the payments of debts, overdue keeping of borrowed articles, graft and
corruption, and accepting stolen properties.
Stinginess: Those who keep all their possessions for themselves, refusing to help the needy.

To Respect Our Neighbor’s Reputation: It is a solemn duty to keep the name of our neighbor
with respect and honor.
Forbids
Lying: It is a mortal sin to conceal the truth with the intention of harming our neighbor. The liar
is the son of the devil.
Hypocrisy: We must not behave in a false and ambivalent way in order to attain favors, or to
cheat our neighbor.

4

utter false accusations against them.
Ninth Commandment
YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR’S WIFE
Commands

death, and beyond.

according to the flesh.

desire it.
Divorce: Whoever divorces his spouse, for whatever reason, and marries another is living in a
state of mortal sin.
Polygamy: It is against the will of God to have more than one spouse, because the scriptures
only allow monogamy.
Tenth Commandment
YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR’S GOODS
Commands
Spirit of Frugality: The greedy are never satisfied with their possessions, while the poor in
spirit are contented and serene, because they trust the Divine Providence and are contented with
what they have.
Forbids
Envy: We must not be sad for the fortune of our neighbors, instead, we should rejoice for them.
Greed: We must not exceedingly crave for material possessions.
