Let us start our journey by asking the guidance of the Holy Spirit through the prayer to Saint Jude. Remember
that we are in the presence of the Lord Almighty.

PRAYER TO ST. JUDE IN TIMES OF SUFFERING

() In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, I place myself into your hands at
this difficult time. Help me to know that I am not alone. Please pray for me, asking God to send
me comfort for my sorrows, bravery for my fears, and healing for my suffering. Ask our loving
God to strengthen my faith and give me the courage to accept His Will for my life. Thank you, St.
Jude, for the hope you offer to all who believe in you. Amen.
INTRODUCTION
This module will focus on the parts and uses of rectangular coordinate system. As you go through this
part, think about this question: How can the Rectangular Coordinate System be used in real life?

CONCEPTS AND EXAMPLES

THE RECTANGULAR COORDINATE SYSTEM

The rectangular coordinate system is also called the xy-plane, Cartesian
coordinate plane, or simply, the Cartesian plane in honor of the French mathematician.
René Descartes (1596 – 1650), who is known as the “Father of Modern Mathematics.”
This discovery is an important tool used in geography, navigation, statistics, economic,
engineering, and sciences in general.

PARTS OF RECTANGULAR
COORDINATE SYSTEM
❖ Cartesian coordinate plane – is a plane formed by
the intersection of two number lines that are
perpendicular to each other.
❖ x-axis – the horizontal number line.
❖ y-axis – the vertical number line.
❖ Origin – the point of intersection of the two axes.
❖ Quadrants – two intersecting axes create four regions.
❖ Ordered pair – every point in the coordinate plane.
❖ x-coordinate/abscissa – the first number in an
ordered pair.
❖ y-coordinate/ordinate – the second number in an
ordered pair.

NOTE: Use capital letter to denote a point or an

ordered pair, and the ordered pair is enclosed by
The Cartesian Coordinate Plane
parentheses wherein the order of the numbers is
important.
GRAPHING ORDERED PAIRS
From the origin, count left or right along the x-axis the number of units as indicated by the abscissa. The
positive abscissa is found on the right of the origin, whereas the negative abscissa is found on the left of the
origin. From this point, count up or down the number of units as indicated by the ordinate. The positive ordinate
is above the x-axis, whereas the negative ordinate is below the x-axis.

Examples:

A. Plot the following points: Solution:
