The Outsiders Summative Project

Choose one of the following summative assignments to complete. Choose the one that appeals to
you the most.

Choice #1
The Outsiders Theme PowerPoint or Prezi:
You must choose one of the quotations below as your starting point:
1. “Stay Gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold.” (p. 148)
2. “He ain’t a Soc,” I said, “He’s just a guy.” (p. 118)
3. “Hey,” I said suddenly, “can you see the sunset real good from the West Side?”She
blinked, startled, then smiled. “Real good.” “You can see it good from the East Side,
too,” I said quietly. (pp. 129-130)
4. “You know, the only thing that keeps Darry from bein’ a Soc is us.” (p. 126)

The assignment:
-Choose one of the quotations and use it to create a presentation that develops a theme of the
novel.
- Your presentation must use evidence from the text and/or the film to create a theme from the
quotation.
-In other words, use specific, concrete evidence from the text and analyze it to show how it
supports your choice of theme.

Choice #3
Outsiders Scrapbook:
- Pretend you are a character from the novel. Design a scrapbook that shares pictures (drawn,
photographed, or cut/pasted) and captions that capture the plot and mood of the whole story.
-Make sure to highlight all the main events of the story
-Make sure that your captions are carefully thought out and are truthful to the novel.
-Make sure that you stay in character with the way that you write, remember the character that
you chose to make this scrapbook
-Keep the theme of the novel in mind

Choice #4
Creative Writing
-Add a chapter to the book written from the point of view of ANY character from the novel
-In this continuation you need to include what has happened to each member of the Curtis family
(Ponyboy, Sodapop, Darry) and may add what happens to other characters as well
- It can be set in the near future or 10, 15, 25 years into the future.
- Make sure to remember the theme of the novel
Rubric Grading (summative grade)—Regardless of which project you select, a thorough understanding
of the following must be demonstrated:

Theme Neatness (capitalization, usage, punctuation, spelling)
Characters Evidence of time (especially if choosing powerpoint/prezi)
Author’s Style

development, dialect(jargon), etc)
