Library- is a source of information on
many different topics. It will have many
books and other resources with
information on a topic that you want
to research for an assignment
or project.

A library usually has:
• a reference section
• a catalogue
• a book section
• a periodicals section
• video tapes, films
and slide section

Referencing Using the Classification
System

Dewey Decimal system

• organizes library materials by discipline or field of study


• books in the same subject area are grouped together and given
the same initial number
• main divisions include philosophy, social sciences, science,
technology, and history
• it puts books into ten main classes.
• uses three digit numbers for the ten classifications

Dewey Decimal
Here are the ten main groups;
• 000 General Works (including journals, encyclopaedias etc.)
• 100 Philosophy and Psychology
• 200 Religion
• 300 Social Sciences
• 400 Language
• 500 Pure Science
• 600 Technology and Applied Science (including Medicine)
• 700 Fine Arts and Recreation
• 800 Literature
• 900 General History and Geography

NLM Classification

• widely-used throughout the world to organize


materials in health, medical and allied health libraries
• is patterned after the Library of Congress (LC)
Classification system
• alphabetical letters denote broad subject
categories which are subdivided by numbers.

• It’s very important to do the referencing when
you borrow ideas from any book to avoid
plagiarism
