Collection Development
• The process of identifying the strengths
and weaknesses of the library’s materials
collection in terms of patron needs and
community resources, and attempting to
correct existing weaknesses, if any.
(Evans and Saponario, 2012)
Collection Management
• Meeting the information needs of the
people in a timely and economical manner
using library resources.
• Adds elements such as long-term
preservation, legal aspects of user access
to materials, and collaborative efforts with
others to provide the most cost-effective
access as possible.(Evans and Saponaro,
2012)

Introduction
An effective school library media center
must:
• reflect the needs of it’s school population
• properly and adequately equipped
• needs of the curriculum and users
In order for it to be a real partner in the
attainment of the educational goals, a set of
standards must be followed.
Collection
• The school library media center shall
acquire print, non-print and electronic
materials as well as equipment that will
support and reinforce the curriculum and
meet the needs, abilities and interests of
the users.

• These materials shall be current and in
good condition and must reflect an
appropriate balance among all types of
resources according to the recommended
annual growth rate as follows:

Collection
• The school library/media center shall
maintain a local history collection
composed of materials about the school
community, its history, programs, people,
etc.

• The librarian/media specialist, in
coordination with the teacher’s, shall be
responsible for the selection and
acquisition of all materials based on a
written Collection Development Plan.

The recommended size for an enrollment of
less than 1000 students is 5000 titles
• 20% shall be published within the last 10
years;
• periodicals of 15 titles of general interest
magazines and 10 title of professional
journals;

• 3 titles of newspapers on national
coverage and 1 title with local news
coverage;
• pamphlets, clippings, government
documents, vocational information and
other materials appropriate to the
curriculum and interest of students;

• 1 map for each geographic region
• 1 special map (i.e. economic, weather,
political, historical, etc.) for each type
being studied.

• A variety of audiovisual equipment


available in amounts quantity adequate
to serve the instructional program of the
school.

1. Book selection shall be a shared
responsibility among the librarians,
teachers and administrators.

2. Basic policies for the selection of printed


and non-printed materials shall be
formally and clearly formulated.

properly organized, stored, and displayed
following standard rules of cataloging and
classification.
4. An inventory and weeding of the
collection shall be conducted regularly.
Preservation and Security

• The school library/media center shall have


a program for the care and preservation of
all its collection.
• It should also have an adequate safeguard
against loss, mutilation, and theft.
Linkages and Networking
The school library/media center shall
participate in resource sharing
networks and establish linkages with
other resource centers in order to
increase the opportunities to intensify
the collection and services.

• The selection of materials and making them easily
accessible for teaching and learning are necessary
for:
(1) the provision of materials of good quality
(2) optimum use of these materials
(3) their functional and efficient organization

• Basic policies for the selection of print and non-
print materials should be clearly formulated.
Furthermore, the selection should be done
through the use of recommended lists and
standard bibliographic tools.

• It is imperative that materials be organized and
arranged so that users of the library and audio-
visual center can obtain materials of all kinds
quickly and easily. The arrangement of
materials should follow some approved
classification scheme.

• Rigid adherence to the numerical sequence of
the classification scheme is not necessary if
another grouping of resources makes the
materials more easily used, more accessible, or
more inviting for exploration. The system used,
however, must be consistent.

be adequate to meet the curricular,
instructional, and recreational needs of
the school community.

acquisition of up-to-date books in various

• Subscription to newspapers, current

teachers and students. Periodicals of
permanent value should be bound.
