The serve must be hit underhandand each team must play their first shot off the bounce. After the bdl
has bouncedonceon eachside, then both teamscan eithervolley the ball in the air or play it off the
bounce. This is calledthe "doublebouncerulenbecausethe ball must hit twice (onceon eachside)
before it can be volleyed. This eliminatesthe serveand volley advantageand prolongsthe rallies. To
volley a ball meansto hit it in the air without first letting it bounce.

The non-volleyzone is the 7-foot zoneon both sidesof the net. No volleying is perminedwithin the
non-volley zone. This rule preventsplayersfrom executingsmashesfrom a positionwithin the zone.
When volleying the ball, the playermay not stepon or over the line. It is a fault if the player's
momentumcausesthe playeror anythingthe playeris wearingor carryingto touchthe non-volleyzone.
It is a fault even if the ball is declareddeadbeforethe playertouchesthe zone.A playermay be in the
non-volley zoneat any othertime. The non-volleyzone is sometimesreferredto as the kitchen.

Both playerson the servingteamare allowedto serve, and a team shall scorepointsonly when serving.

The server must keep both feet behindthe baselineduring the servewith at leastone foot on the court
surfaceat the time the ball is struck..The serveis madeunderhand. The paddlemust contactthe ball
below the waist. The serveis madediagonallycrosscourt and must clear the non-volleyzone.The non-
volley line is a shortline for the serve(the serveis a fault if it hits the line). All other lines are goodat
all times. Only one serveattemptis allowed, exceptin the eventof a let (the ball touchesthe net on the
serve, and landson the proper servicecourt). l.et servesare replayed. At the start of each new game, only
one playeron the first servingteam is permittedto serveand fault beforegiving up the ball to the
opponents.Thereafterboth membersof each team will serveand fault beforethe ball is turnedover to
the opposingteam. When the receivingteam wins the serve, the playerin the right handcourt will
